We continue on our exploration by segment of the best-selling cars worldwide in 2012, now onto Small cars. The top of the ranking is extremely tight with 3 models within 35,000 sales: the Ford Fiesta wins with 742,037 units, ahead of the VW Polo/Vento at 733,678 and the Toyota Yaris/Vios at 708,619. The Hyundai Accent follows a little lower with 683,871 sales. Excellent showing of the Suzuki Swift/Dzire, #19 overall and #5 Small car at 532,462 units, nearly two-thirds of this total coming from India!

The VW Gol, king in Brazil, ranks 6th with 482,594 sales, the Kia Rio is #7, Honda Fit/Jazz #8 and Chevrolet Aveo/Sonic #9. It is interesting to notice that French and Italian manufacturers, once the absolute dominant players in this segment, are now relegated way down in the ranking: the best-performing French car is the Renault Clio at #11 and #32 overall in spite of spanning 3 different generation and with the addition of its booted version the Symbol, while the Peugeot 207 is #17 and #68 overall, the Peugeot 208 #21 and #91 overall and the Fiat Punto #22 and #98 overall, beaten up by the Brazilian Palio/Siena at #13 and #48.
Toyota Yaris
This will change next year though, because the Renault Logan and Sandero, until now separate models and ranking #12 in the category with 373,819 sales and #15 at 299,848 units respectively, inaugurate a common front half for the new generation and will be counted as the hatchback and sedan versions of one model (like the VW Polo/Vento or Gol/Voyage) from 2013 onwards. Their 2012 sales alone would have earned the French-Romanian couple a 5th place in the category.

Further down, notice also the outstanding 14th place of the Toyota Aqua/Prius c, the Lada Granta at #29, FAW Xiali N3 at #33, Toyota Etios at #36 and #218 overall, the premium Citroen DS3 at #40 and #280 overall with 68,000 sales, the Lifan 320 at #45 and the all-new Hyundai HB20 and Chevrolet Onix from Brazil pointing their bonnet at #47 (#503) and #51 (#526) respectively…
