Thanks to Austin I can share with you some preliminary data for the Thai new car market in the Full Year 2012, 2555 in the Thai calendar. After being disrupted by dramatic floods at the end of 2011, new car sales in Thailand are expected to be up by a whopping 81% in 2012 to reach an unbelievable 1,436,335 registrations. When you know that the Thai market never broke the 1 million annual sales barrier before and did so after just 9 months this year you can start to gage how outstanding this year’s performance is. No surprise atop the models ranking: the Toyota Hilux is the most popular vehicle in the country once again and passes the 200,000 annual units milestone for the first time in any country in the world at 214,917 sales.

Mitsubishi Mirage

It is followed by the Isuzu D-Max at 171,012 units, up 52% year-on-year. Another record is broken in third position: the Toyota Vios remains the best-selling Passenger Car in the country and thanks to sales up a mammoth 72% on 2011, it breaks the 100,000 annual units barrier for the first time for any Passenger Car in Thailand at 101,155 sales. Outstanding performance also for the Honda City, up 3 spots and 140% on last year to rank #4 at 66,589 units and kicking the Mitsubishi Triton down into 5th place with 54,679 sales, up just 2%.

Both the Toyota Hilux and Vios pass significant annual volume milestones in 2012.

There are two all-new models in this year’s Top 10 in Thailand: the Nissan Almera is an instant hit and manages to land directly in 6th place at 51,254 units and just under 4% share, while the Mitsubishi Mirage arrives at #10 with 32,638 sales and 2.5%. Notice also the Chevrolet Colorado increasing its sales 4-fold thanks to the new generation of the model, up to #8 at 34.471 units, and the Toyota Fortuner at a shiny 9th place with 33,224 sales.

Honda Brio

Other great performers further down the Thai ranking include the Mazda BT-50 increasing its sales 3-fold to #13 at 25,925 units, the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport at #14, the Honda Brio up to #16 at an estimated 21,000 sales for its first full year in market, the Ford Ranger doubling its sales to 17,161 at #20 and the Honda CR-V up 79% to 10,321 units.
