The Scottish new car market is up a very healthy 9% year-on-year in 2012 to 181,785 registrations, outperforming the UK which is up 5%. For the 5th consecutive year, Vauxhall is the best-selling brand thanks to 26,597 sales and 14.6% share, ahead of Ford at 22,623 and 12.4%, swapping positions compared with the UK ranking. The Vauxhall domination in Scotland was one of my first observations while driving around the region last year. Coincidentally, the most popular vehicle in Scotland has also held the pole position for 5 years in a row: the Vauxhall Corsa sells 11,745 units for a 6.5% share, up 8% on 2011.

Renault Clio

The Ford Fiesta, #1 in the UK, is #2 in Scotland with 10,226 sales and 5.6%, up a magnificent 38% year-on-year. The Vauxhall Astra rounds up the podium at 7,195 units and 4%, gaining one spot both on the 2011 Scottish ranking and on the 2012 UK ranking. The Ford Focus is #4, down 2 ranks vs. the UK while the Renault Clio finishes 2012 at a shiny 5th position compared to #8 in 2011 and well below the Top 10 in the UK.
