California (USA) Full Year 2012: Toyota Prius new leader

Toyota Prius C

* See the Top 15 best-selling models by clicking on the title! *

We are focusing today on the USA’s biggest market, California, up a fantastic 25% year-on-year in 2012 to 1,617,103 registrations, to be compared to +13% in the USA overall. This means that if California was a country, it would be the 10th biggest new car market worldwide, behind Canada (1.68m) and passing South Korea (1.5m) and Italy (1.4m) in the process. 2012 will remain a very important year for the Californian new car market: the year a hybrid car topped the models ranking for the first time. Toyota doesn’t separate sales of the different models in the Prius family in California and as a result the Prius is now the most popular car in the State, up a gargantuan 78% on 2011 to 60,688 sales for an excellent 3.8% market share.

Last year’s leader, the Honda Civic, is down to #2 even though it gains a huge 52% year-on-year to 57,124 units and 3.5%. The Toyota Camry rounds up the podium again with 50,250 sales and 3.1%, up 38% on 2011, while the Honda Accord is down 2 spots to #4 in spite of sales up a very respectable 35% year-on-year to 49,420. Below the Toyota Corolla at #5, the Honda CR-V is up 33% and one rank to #6, meaning the entire Top 6 is composed of Toyotas and Hondas

In fact, domestic brands only represent 29.7% of overall sales in California vs. 44.5% in the USA overall… There are only two domestic models in the Californian Top 15 this year: the Ford F-Series at #7 with 25,434 units and 1.6% share and the Chevrolet Silverado at #15 with 17,804 units and 1.1%. Notice also the Nissan Altima up 26% to #8 and the Hyundai Sonata up 30% to #9.

Every quarter we now have our rendezvous with Californian new car sales, being the biggest market in the USA. Over the last quarter of 2012, the Californian new car market is up a whopping 22% year-on-year to 371,403 registrations vs. 10% growth in the USA as a whole, bringing the Full Year 2012 total to 1,617,103 units, up 13% on 2011. The Toyota Prius family confirms it is now the most popular model in the State, improving its market share to 3.9% thanks to 14,308 sales. The Honda Civic follows at 13,981 units and 3.8% while the Toyota Camry jumps onto the podium at #3 with 12,362 sales and 3.3%.

Mercedes E-Class

In fact, the entire Top 7 best-sellers over Q4 2012 are identical to the Full Year 2012 ranking, but it’s below that things get interesting, with both BMW and Mercedes models making waves. The BMW 3 Series is up to a fantastic 10th spot over the period at 5,159 units and 1.4%, whereas Mercedes manages to place two models within the Californian Top 15! The C-Class is up to #12 with 5,124 sales while the E-Class is up to #14 at 5,028 units, only 135 sales away from the 9th spot…

Canary Island (Spain) Full Year 2012: Discover the Top 40 brands

Canary Islands

* See the Top 40 All-brands ranking by clicking on the title! *

Today we welcome a new territory on BestSellingCarsBlog: the Canary Islands, a Spanish archipelago located just off the northwest coast of mainland Africa, 100 km west of the border between Morocco and the Western Sahara. The Canary Islands are home to just over 2 million people, and 25,071 new vehicles found a buyer in the archipelago in 2012, a sharp 26% year-on-year drop to be compared to -13% in Spain overall… If  nationally Volkswagen is the fresh new leader in the brands ranking, the German manufacturer actually celebrates its 8th consecutive year in pole position in the Canary Islands with 3,463 sales and 13.8% vs. 8.9% nationally. The last time VW was not #1 was in 2004 when Renault led.

VW Polo

The Volkswagen Polo could well be the best-selling model in the archipelago. In fact, Canary Islands consumers are much fonder of German and Japanese brands than in the mainland: Opel is #2 at 2,850 units and 11.4% vs. #7 and 7.1% nationally, Ford is #4 with 1,850 sales and 7.4% vs. #6, Nissan is #5 vs. #10 and Toyota is #7 vs. #9. Seat remains #3 at 2,162 units and 8.6% while French manufacturers all lodge weaker results than in the mainland: Renault is #6 vs. #4, Citroen #8 vs. #5 and Peugeot #11 vs. #2.

Dacia Duster. Dacia is the #9 carmaker in the archipelago in 2012.

Other manufacturers doing significantly better in the Canary Islands than in Spain overall are Dacia up to a fantastic 9th place with 1,214 sales and 4.8% vs. #15 and 2.5% nationally, Fiat at #10 and 4.2% vs. #16 and 2.3% and Chevrolet at #13 and 3.3% vs. #17 and 2.2%.

Spain Full Year 2012: Seat Ibiza and Nissan Qashqai resist, Volkswagen now #1 brand in worst year since the eighties

Seat Ibiza

* NOW UPDATED with Top 60 All-brands and Top 125 models! Click on title to see *

A totally hellish year for the Spanish new car market, testing new lows at 699,589 registrations, down 13% on 2011 and the weakest level ever, since statistics started getting compiled by ANIACAM in 1989. So we are dealing with the worst annual tally in at least 25 years, so so far away from the 1,647,837 units in 2005, the best year on record. For the 9th time ever and the 4th in a row, the Seat Ibiza is the most popular model at home albeit down a worrying 23% year-on-year to 23,916 sales and 3.4%. It topped the monthly ranking 4 times in 2012 but has however not been #1 since June.

Nissan Qashqai

The Nissan Qashqai handles beautifully, down ‘only’ 9% to improve its market share to 3.2% at 22,281 units. Before 2012, it had only topped the monthly Spanish ranking once, but did so 4 times this year: in JanuaryJulyAugust and November. The Renault Megane stays #3 (-13%) and ranked #1 in May and September. The Citroen C4 is up 5 spots to #8 with 16,196 sales and we have to go down to #14 and the Citroen C3 to find a model actually gaining ground on 2011: up 10% and 4 ranks. Note the Renault Clio ranked #1 in October for potentially the first time in 20 years, boosted by the arrival of the 4th gen.

Range Rover Evoque

The Ford C-Max is up 11% to #17, the Dacia Sandero up 47% and 20 spots to #18, helped by a fantastic month of December, the Peugeot 208 lands directly at #20 with 9,690 units, even leading the market in December… Other gainers within the Top 100 include the Hyundai ix35 up 29% to #22, the Nissan Juke up 6% to #30, Kia Sportage up 7% to #31, VW Tiguan up 64% to #32, Audi A1 up 12% to #38, Fiat 500 up 39% to #40, Mercedes B-Class up 51% to #42, Audi Q3 up 632% to #47 for its first full year of sales and the Range Rover Evoque up 370% to a brilliant #52 spot.

Dacia Sandero. Dacia sales are up 15% in Spain in 2012

Brand-wise, it’s a total change of guard at the top: Volkswagen is now the most popular carmaker in the country with 62,521 sales and 8.9% share, ahead of Peugeot at 55,649 and 8% while Seat, leader in 2011, is down 25% to #3 with 54,870 sales and 7.8%. Both Renault and Citroen grab 7.5% of the Spanish market and are up one spot, taking advantage of Ford crumbling down at -21% to #6. Audi is up 2 ranks to #8, Hyundai up 5% to #11, Dacia up 15% to #15 and Land Rover up 28% to #20.

The Toyota Hilux is down to #2 at 18,476 units and 32.9%. These market shares are to be compared with 39.9% and 31.7% year-to-date for the Hilux and D-Max respectively. Australia Full Year 2012: Now with exclusive rankings by State!

The Toyota Prado is #3 in Australia’s Northern Territory vs. #15 nationally.

* See the Top 10 best-selling models for each Australian State by clicking on the title! *

Thanks to Elise and the team at Toyota Australia, I can share with you an exclusive Top 10 models ranking by State for Australia. You will not find this anywhere else on the web! With the overall market hitting a new record in 2012 at 1,112,032 registrations, absolutely every State/Territory gains ground vs. 2011, an exceptional performance in itself. The biggest market in the country is still New South Wales (Sydney) with 341,211 sales (+8%) followed by Victoria (Melbourne) at 293,778 and +9% and Queensland (Brisbane) at 235,025 (+11%). Then we find Western Australia (Perth) at 128,005 (+17% – boosted by the mining industry), South Australia (Adelaide) at 67,999 and +8%, ACT (Canberra) at 17,435 and +11%, Tasmania at 16,981 and +1% and the Northern Territory at 11,598 and +16%.

The Mazda3 now leads Australia’s two biggest markets: New South Wales and Victoria.

Model-wise, if last year the Toyota Hilux was king in 3 States vs. 2 for the Mazda3 and Holden Commodore, in 2012 the situation is slightly different. Confirming it is the most popular vehicle in the country for the 2nd year in a row, the Mazda3 now leads in 3 different states: it stays in pole position in New South Wales and ACT but is now also #1 in the 2nd biggest market, Victoria, where it dethrones the Holden Commodore.

Toyota Hilux

The Toyota Hilux keeps the pole position in the 3 States it was dominating in 2011: doing best in Northern Territory with a huge 9.8% share, followed by Western Australia (5.4%) and Queensland (5.2%). Two additional models lead a State this year: the Holden Cruze “at home” in South Australia with 3,847 sales and 5.7% and the Toyota Corolla in Tasmania at 565 units and 3.3%.

Ayers Rock/Uluru in Australia’s Northern Territory

Northern Territory, home of Ayers Rock, deserves its own little paragraph even though it is the smallest market in the country. And the reason is the 7 best-selling vehicles there are all Toyotas! And 8 in the Top 10… In a market up 16% year-on-year, below the expected Hilux and Corolla, the Prado is up 50% to #3 vs. #15 in the national ranking, the Land Cruiser Wagon at #4 vs. #33, the Camry at #5, Yaris up 65% to #6, RAV4 up 40% to #7 vs. #19 nationally and the Land Cruiser Ute at #9 vs. #47 nationally…

More commentaries below the jump.

Not helped by a month of December down 25% year-on-year, the Israeli new car market is down 9% on a record 2011 this year to 204,939 registrations. The models ranking is completely reshuffled: after at least 7 consecutive years of reign of the Mazda3, the Ford Focus brilliantly become the top selling model in Israel this year with sales up a huge 151% to 15,792 units for a gargantuan 7.7% market share. The Toyota Corolla stays #2 but loses 29% to 8,138 sales and 4%.

Hyundai i35

The Hyundai i35 (aka Elantra) is up 135% and 17 spots to round up the podium thanks to 7,589 sales and 3.7%, and a third model more than doubles its sales vs. last year in the Top 10: the Kia Picanto is up 131% and 19 ranks to land in 5th place at 6,054 units and 3%. The Hyundai i20 is up 6% to #4, the Hyundai i25 (aka Accent) up 51% to #6, the Seat Ibiza up 35% to #7 and the Mazda3 down 7 spots and 55% to #8.

Kia Picanto

Brand-wise, Hyundai remains the most popular carmaker in the country and improves its market share to 15.4% thanks to 31,525 sales. It is now followed by Ford, up 83% and 6 spots to #2 at 20,101 units and 9.8% while Toyota rounds up the podium like last year at 9.8% also. Kia is up 23% to 9.4% share, Skoda up 5 ranks and 22% to #5 at 5.5% share but Mazda is down 4 ranks and 48% to #6 with 11,092 sales and 5.4%.

Thailand 2012: Top 40 best-selling models now available!

The Brio has pushed Honda to #1 Passenger Car brand in Thailand in October.

* See the Top 40 best-selling models and Top 20 brands by clicking on the title! *

Thanks to my dear friend Henrik who sent me the Thai magazine Formula from Bangkok, I can share with you more detail on the best-selling models in Thailand in 2012. Only thing is, for now only 10 months 2012 figures are available. Over the period, 1,125,283 new vehicles found a buyer in the country, a huge 58% year-on-year increase. In October sales are up an even more impressive 213% year-on-year to 134,336 units and the most striking event of the month in Thailand is the first place of Honda in the Passenger Cars category with 18,951 sales and 29.3% share, ahead of traditional leader Toyota at 18,765 units and 29%, potentially due to the Honda Brio’s success.

Mazda2 Sedan

Over the first 10 months of 2012, the Top 10 best-selling models are familiar, however we now have access to their year-on-year evolution. Notice the Toyota Hilux up faster than the market at +69%, the Honda City up 103% to #4, the Nissan Almera almost all-new at #7 and the Toyota Fortuner up 144% to #9. Note also that with added sales from its sedan version the Mazda2 is now #10, while the Mitsubishi Mirage is still #12 – about to get up to the Top 10 by end of November and the Honda Brio up 356% at #23. The Chevrolet Sonic (#35) and Nissan Sylphy (#37) make their first appearance in the Thai ranking.

Japan by version December 2012: Nissan Sylphy & Subaru BRZ up

Nissan Sylphy

* See the Top 100 best-selling models by clicking on the title! Thanks Austin *

As is now the tradition, after exploring the Passenger car Top 30 and the Kei car Top 25 in Japan, we have a more thorough look at overall December sales split by version (sedan, MPV…) and with Light Commercial Vehicles added. It has been an absolutely outstanding year for the Toyota Aqua, #1 for the 11th month in a row (no interruption since last February!) with 20,397 sales, while the Honda NBOX holds the 2nd spot for the 8th time in the last 9 months at 13,646 units. The Suzuki Wagon R rounds up the podium for the third consecutive month with 12,424 sales.

Subaru BRZ

Excellent month for the Nissan Note up 3 spots on November to #5 and for the Daihatsu Move/Conte up 5 to #11. The Toyota Prius is down to its worst ranking of the year at #7 while its MPV version the Prius Alpha continues to catch up: now equivalent to 87% of the Prius sales with 7,723 vs. 8,850. The Honda N-One progresses further to #9 thanks to 8,314 sales.

Further down, the Subaru Forester is up 5 ranks to #25, the Nissan Sylphy makes its first appearance in the ranking at #35, Subaru XV sales are available again at an impressive 2,090 units (#39), the Mazda Atenza (aka Mazda6) breaks into the Top 50 at #48 and the Subaru BRZ catches up on the Toyota 86 at a best-ever #61 with 1,001 sales vs. 1,091 for the 86…
