In November 1982, the Honda Accord becomes the first Japanese nameplate to be manufactured in the USA when it rolls off Honda’s Maryville, Ohio assembly line. At the time it’s the 2nd generation of the model that was produced, and since then 9 million Accords have hit American roads, with the nameplate now in its 9th generation.

The Honda Accord was the best-selling Japanese model in the US right from 1982. It ranked #5 passenger car in 1986, celebrated its first million in 1988 and made history in 1989 when it became the first Japanese model to lead the US passenger car ranking overall. It would stay #1 in 1990 and 1991, then ranked #2 behind the Ford Taurus from 1992 to 1996.

1986 Third generation Honda Accord

From 1997 to 2000, the Honda Accord was the #2 best-selling passenger car in the USA again but this time behind the Toyota Camry. It passed the 5 million mark in 1999. The Accord climbed back in pole position in 2001 before dropping back to #2 behind the Camry again from 2002 to 2005 and in 2007, 2008 and 2010.

2008 8th generation Honda Accord

The 8th generation Accord even led the overall models ranking in April 2009, beating all pick-ups in the midst of the Global Financial Crisis. With the 9th generation now on sale, the Accord looks set to finish 2012 in 2nd place anew behind the Camry.
