Moscow November 2011: Lada weak, Focus & Logan shine

Ford Focus

* See the Top 165 best-selling models by clicking on the title! *

Thanks to Enrique from I can share with you the best-sellers in Moscow, Russia for November 2011 when 35,820 new cars were registered. The Muscovite car landscape is totally different than the rest of Russia and this is why it is fascinating. For starters, brand-wise, Lada is not even #1! It ranks third with 2,422 sales below Nissan (2,602) and Kia (2,442). Hyundai is #4 with 2,005 units and Toyota #5 at 2,004.

Renault Logan

The Lada 2104-5-7 however is still the best-selling model in Moscow even though it plunged to a lowest-ever #10 in the national ranking. With the Lada Priora at #10, it is the only Russian model in the Muscovite Top 10! The Ford Focus comes at a very strong 2nd with 568 sales, followed by the Renault Logan at 547, the VW Polo at 544, Opel Astra at 542 and Kia Cee’d at 516. Respectively #1 and #2 nationally, the Lada Samara and Kalina only rank #12 and #11 in Moscow.

Lifan Solano

Further along the ranking, you can see a few Chinese models: the Great Wall Hover is #45, the Vortex Tingo (aka Chery Tiggo) is #91 and the Lifan Solano a favourite with Moscow Police is #154.

Mercedes GL Class

But the most interesting feature of the Muscovite models ranking is the omnipresence of luxurious and expensive models. See for yourself: Lexus RX at #60, Infiniti FX at #70, BMW X6 at #79, Mercedes GL Class #80, Range Rover Sport #87, Mercedes S Class #106, Audi A7 #108, BMW 7 Series #112, Audi A8 #124, Porsche Cayenne #128, Audi Q7 #133 and Porsche Panamera #166…

Even More Historical Data uploaded for 12 countries!

The Opel Corsa was #1 in Portugal in 2001

* See the direct links to these 52 new posts by clicking on the title! *

While it may not seem like it given there has only been a couple of new posts in the last few days, I have been working really hard backstage, uploading loads of historical data for 12 countries. Given I backdate these historical posts so they appear in the right order in each country, you won’t see them on the home page, hence this update.

The Fiat Punto was #1 in Ireland from 1998 to 2000

I have uploaded all-new historical information for 12 countries: the most extensive being Spain from 1998 to 2009: you now have access to a Top 10 for each year with the MPV versions (Scenic, Xsara Picasso…) separated which is really rare data. And as a result some new info: the Renault Megane broke the 100,000 annual sales mark in 2004 and the Seat Ibiza became the country’s best-seller for the first time in 2006, not in 2009.

The Renault Megane II is the only model to have sold over 100,000 units in a single year in Spain

Other countries are Estonia from 2005 to 2009, Hungary from 2002 to 2009, Iceland from 2001 t 2009, Ireland from 1998 to 2006, Latvia from 2005 to 2009, Lithuania from 2006 to 2009, Luxembourg from 2001 to 2009, Norway for 1998, Poland for 2005 and 2006, Portugal from 1998 to 2007 and Switzerland from 1998 to 2004.

Portugal November 2011: VW Passat and Audi A4 shine

Audi A4

* See the Top 20 best-selling models by clicking on the title! Thanks to Tuga *

The climate is getting worse and worse for Portuguese car sales, down a worrying 49% this month to 9,519 registrations. This brings the year-to-date total to 142,195 units, down 27%. The Top 4 is unchanged compared to October, with the Renault Megane leading the way both this month with 5.1% share and year-to-date at 5.5%. Renault manages a 1-2 again with the Clio at #2 with 4.1% of the market in November, #3 year-to-date at 3.8%.

Follow the VW Golf at 3%, #6 year-to-date at 3.3% and the VW Polo at 2.7%, #5 YTD at 3.4%. It seems like every country I write about sees very strong sales of the VW Passat this month, and Portugal is no different! It gains 8 spots on October to land in 5th place with 241 sales and 2.5%, but is still #15 YTD at 1.7%.

Other great performers this month include the Audi A4 up 14 ranks to claw its way back in the Top 10 at #10 with 2.2% vs. #20 and 1.3% YTD, the Peugeot 308 up 10 spots to #13 and the new generation Toyota Yaris in the Top 20 for the 2nd month in a row at #18. Notice the Seat Ibiza, #2 YTD, down to #15.

Denmark November 2011: VW Passat in pole position

VW Passat

* See the Top 50 best-selling models by clicking on the title! *

15,044 new cars were registered last month in Denmark, bringing the year-to-date total to 154,660 units. For the first time since the current generation has gone on sale, the VW Passat leads the way in the models ranking with a very solid 770 sales and 5.1% share. It jumps from #7 to #4 year-to-date at 3,865 units and 2.5%. In fact, it’s an outstanding month for the Volkswagen brand, placing 4 models in the Top 8: the Polo at #3, Touran at #6 (+16 on October) & Golf at #8.

As usual the Danish market is very volatile and the other great performers this month show impressive growth. They include the new gen Toyota Yaris up 19 spots to #4, the Ford Mondeo up 20 ranks to #7, the Citroen C5 up 35 spots to #9 and the Citroen C3 up 22 ranks to #11. The Chevrolet Spark is down to #10 but stays #1 over the first 11 months of 2011 with 5,480 sales and 3.5%, followed by the Toyota Aygo (#5 this month) at 2.9% and the Opel Corsa (#12 this month) at 2.7%. Notice the new Kia Rio landing directly in 35th place with 171 units sold for its first month.

Malaysia November 2011: VW Passat and Lexus CT impress

Lexus CT

* See the Top 50 best-selling models by clicking on the title! *

Malaysian car sales are up a healthy 8% this month at 46,816 registrations, bringing the year-to-date total back into positive at 532,847 units, up 0.6% year-on-year. As it is usually the case in this market, the entire Top 8 is absolutely frozen-immobile, whether it be compared to October or the 2011 year-to-date ranking. Not much fun…

VW Passat

So the Perodua MyVi is in pole position in November with, again, an extravagant market share at 16.2% thanks to 7,574 sales, and #1 YTD at 73,357 units and 13.8%. Follow the Proton Saga at 11.7% in November and 13% in 2011, the Perodua Viva at 10.9% and 10.3% and the Proton Persona at 7% and 8.1%. The Perodua Alza misses the 4th spot by just one unit at 3,272 sales, delivering a 7.1% market share well above its 2011 level of 6.3%.

Proton Inspira

It’s further down the ranking that things get a little more animated. The Proton Inspira, a badge-engineered Mitsubishi Lancer, is up 6 spots on October to climb into the Top 10 for the first time since January at 711 units and 1.5%, the Toyota Prius is up 18 ranks to #15 and 1%, the VW Passat breaks into the Malaysian Top 20 for the very first time, up 12 spots to #20 with 417 sales and the Lexus CT200h is up a huge 29 ranks to land in 23rd place at 330 units.

Previous month: Malaysia October 2011: Perodua MyVi above 20% market share

The VW Passat was #2 in Austria in 2001

* View the links to these 23 new posts by cliking on the title! *

I am taking advantage of the Christmas holidays to upload more historical data for various countries. For the first time on Best Selling Cars Blog you can now access official data for Cyprus and a Top 10 for 2005 and 2006 there.

The Citroen C5 was #3 in Denmark in 2002 – its highest year-end ranking in the world

I have also uploaded all-new historical information for 10 countries/territories: Austria in 2001 and 2002, Belgium from 1998 to 2009, Czech Republic in 1998 and 1999, Denmark from 1998 to 2005, Finland from 1998 to 2003, Hungary in 1998 and 1999 and Japan in 1998 and 2000. The first half of the noughties was a very successful period for Peugeot, placing both the 206 and 307 on top of the models ranking in Belgium and Denmark, so now you can witness this in detail…

The Toyota Avensis was #1 in Finland in 2001, interrupting a decade-long domination of the Corolla

I have also added more detail to already existing data: a Top 75 Passenger Cars ranking for the USA in 1998 and 1999, a Top 30 for Western Europe in 1998 and 1999 and a Light Commercial Vehicles Top 20 for Europe in 2004 and 2005.

For the third consecutive month, Hyundai is the best-selling brand ahead of Renault, a very rare occurrence. It sells 4,510 units vs. 4,475 for the French brand. And for the 2nd month in a row the Hyundai Atos is the most popular car in the country with a very solid 2,177 sales and 9.2% market share. It is still #2 year-to-date however at 18,103 units and 6.7%.

Dacia Logan

Just as we thought it had disappeared from the Algerian podium for good, the Dacia Logan is back with a vengeance, up to #2 with 2,052 sales and an excellent 8.7% share, by far its best score in 12 months. It is #5 year-to-date. The Hyundai Accent stays #3 with a robust 7.3% share, well ahead of its 2011 level at 5.8% (#3 also). The Peugeot 207 ranks 4th with a very strong 6.8% share, ahead of the 2011 leader the Renault Symbol at 6.2%. The Chevrolet Sail is down 4 spots to #6 and the VW Polo reappears in the Top 10 at #9.

Peugeot 207i
