World vehicle population tops 1 billion units

According to Wards Auto, the number of vehicles in operation worldwide surpassed the 1 billion-unit mark in 2010 for the first time ever, at 1.015 billion compared to 980 million in 2009. The figure reflects the approximate number of cars, light-, medium- and heavy-duty trucks and buses registered worldwide.

Out of the the 35.6 million vehicles added to world roads this year, nearly half (16.8 million) were registered in China. At 78 million vehicles, China’s population is now ahead of Japan’s (73.9 million). India’s vehicle population went up 9% to 20.8 million units, and Brazil experienced the second largest volume increase after China with 2.5 million additional vehicles. U.S. registrations grew less than 1% last year but the country’s 239.8 million units is still by far the largest vehicle population in the world.

Vehicles in operation in 2010 equated roughly to a ratio of 1:6.75 vehicles to people among a world population of 6.9 billion. In the U.S., the ratio was 1:1.3, the highest vehicle-to-person ratio in the world. Italy was second with 1:1.45. France, Japan, and the U.K. followed, all at 1:1.7. In China, the ratio was 1:17.2 and in India it was 1:56.3.

The world vehicle population passed the 1 billion-unit mark 24 years after reaching 500 million in 1986. Prior to that, the vehicle population doubled roughly every 10 years from 1950 to 1970, when it first reached the 250 million-unit threshold.

Iran July 2011: Iran Khodro Tondar 90 & Samand shine UPDATED

Iran street scene. Picture: Afshin Khaledi

* Now updated with the Top 10 best-selling imported cars thanks to Afshin Khaledi! *

I can now share with you on top of the most produced car in Iran a Top 10 of the best-selling imported models in the country. The figures are very small compared to production figures but nevertheless very insightful. Korean cars seem to have a near monopoly on imports, with the Hyundai Sonata YF (latest generation) on top with 1,147 units which would get it an impressive 8th place overall. It is followed by the Kia Sportage at 563 units and the Hyundai ix55 at 556 sales. See ‘Read more’ at end of post for the full Top 10.

Iran Khodro Tondar 90 – none other than a 1st generation Dacia Logan

Thanks to the Iran Vehicles Manufacturers Association (IVMA) I can share with you the latest Iranian production figures by model. Total production for July was up 1% year-on-year at 117,908 units and up 2% year-to-date at 438,102. Rumours that production of the iconic Saipa Pride stopped recently are untrue: 53,329 units came out of the Iran Khodro factory last month, up 8% year-on-year, and 197,406 units in the last 4 months!

Iran Khodro Samand

The 24 year-old Peugeot 405 also stays solid in 2nd place at 26,978 units, down 11% year-on-year. Excellent performance of the Iran Khodro Samand, up 16% to 3rd place and 13,302 units, passing the Peugeot 206 at 9,157 units (-29%). The Iran Khodro Tondar 90 (aka Dacia Logan) also impresses with figures up a massive 119% year-on-year at 7,697 units this month. Year-to-date it is up 84% at 23,419 units.

Saipa Tiba

Lastly, the Saipa Tiba, destined to replace the Pride in the long term, continues its slow but steady gearing up: from 1,059 units in April to 2,151 in May, 2,912 in June and 3,105 in July. Still a long way to go to catch up on the 50,000+ monthly units of the Pride! Also notice the Mazda2 breaking into the Top 10 at #9 with 697 units.

France mid-August 2011: Citroen C3 leads, VW Golf up to #4

Citroen C3

* See the Top 10 best-selling models by clicking on ‘Read more’ at end of post!

It’s a French marathon on the site these last few days! After a few weeks of Summer holidays, French magazine Auto Plus has resumed publishing the weekly Top 10 Rankings and I can share with you an update on August’s first half.

August is always eventful for the French models ranking because it is by far the slowest month of the year and promotions have a greater impact on the overall ranking. 2011 is no exception, with the Citroen C3 flamboyantly taking the lead with 1,991 sales and 4.4% share! If it maintains this level until the end of the month it will be the first time a Citroen model tops the French monthly ranking since the Ami 6…44 years ago!

VW Golf

The other gobsmacking performance is coming from the VW Golf, up to #4 over the period at 3.3% and 1,474 sales: this is only 101 units below the Renault Clio! The VW Polo follows close behind at 1,383 sales and 3%, making it two Volkswagens in the Top 5, possibly a first. The Dacia Duster is back to very robust figures at #6 with 2.9% share and the Citroen C4 is up to #8 vs. #12 in July.

The brands ranking is all over the place as well with Citroen #1 at 17.1%, ahead of Peugeot (14.2%) and Renault at a very weak 12.7% and threatened by Volkswagen (10.7%)!
