Mexico 2005-2006: Nissan Tsuru and Chevrolet Chevy C2 dominate record market at 1.2m units

The Nissan Tsuru resumes its domination of the Mexican market.

It’s another record year for Mexican new car sales in 2005, up 4% to 1.157.137 units, only the 2nd time in history above one million. Nissan (+0.1%) edges up to retain the brands pole position with 20.3% share but Chevrolet (+2%) is getting closer at 19.7% while Ford (+7.7%) widens the gap with Volkswagen (-12.2%). Dodge (+6.5%) remains at #5, Honda (+30.3%) is up one spot to #6 and Toyota (+47.9%) up two to #7. After two years at #2, the Nissan Tsuru (-0.6%) reclaims the models top spot despite losing 400 sales on 2004, benefiting from larger drops by the Chevrolet Chevy C2 (-5.8%) and VW Pointer (-25.4%) just as the Nissan Platina (-11.3%) bounces back up two spots to #3 in spite of falling by the double-digits. The Chevrolet Corsa (+8.8%) and Ford Fiesta (+49.2%) advance to #5 and #6 respectively.

In 2006, the Mexican market edges up another 0.6% to a new record 1.164.008 units. The Top 5 brands remain unchanged: Nissan (-2.8%) leads the way with 19.6% share above Chevrolet (-5.7%), Ford (-7.1%), Volkswagen (-9.3%) and Dodge (+11.8%). Toyota (+70.1%) surges to a record 6th place, becoming the best-selling Japanese carmaker ahead of Honda (+22.8%) while Pontiac (+55.5%) returns to the Top 10 at #9. The Nissan Tsuru (-2.9%) and Chevrolet Chevy C2 (-4%) remains the best-selling nameplates in the country, distancing the VW Jetta (+7.6%), Nissan Platina (-29%) and Sentra (+1.7%).
