Indonesia 2006: Toyota Avanza ends 28 year-reign of Toyota Kijang/Innova

The Toyota Avanza is the new leader in Indonesia.

New car sales in Indonesia are hit full frontal by another economic crisis in 2006 at -40.2%, tumbling down to 295.326 units – the lowest annual score since 2002 – 314.000 according to Gaikindo. Toyota (-30%) resists much better, improving its share to a mammoth 42.1%, understood to be a new all-time record for the brand in Indonesia. Suzuki (-49.7%) isn’t that lucky, seeing its share thaw almost 3 percentage points from 17.7% to 15.1%. Honda (-40.7%) and Daihatsu (-42.2%) roughly follow the market, Isuzu (-32.2%), Mitsubishi Fuso (-33.1%) and Ford (-35.1%) outpace the market but Nissan (-60.8%), Kia (-56%) and Mitsubishi (-54.4%) fall faster. Chery launches and lands at #14, Proton at #17.

There’s a lightning strike in the models ranking this month: the Toyota Avanza (-8.1%) posts the only single-digit loss in the Top 13 to end 28 consecutive years of domination of the Toyota Kijang Innova (-46%), edging past by just 197 sales according to our manufacturers source, when adding the new Kijang Innova and the previous generation Kijang (6.618). According to Gaikindo, the Avanza victory is a lot more definitive with a 5.695 sales advantage, but the Kijang Innova doesn’t include the Kijang. The Suzuki Carry (-52.3%) remains at #3 above the Daihatsu Xenia (-26%) up two spots to #4, displacing the Honda Jazz (-42.8%) and Suzuki APV (-53.9%).
