Canada 2005-2006: Honda Civic threatens Ford F-Series for #1

New light vehicle sales in Canada leap up 2.5% in 2005 to 1.583.599 units. Rare event atop the brands ranking: Chevrolet (+0.7%) reclaims the top spot off Ford (-4.5%) for the first time since 1991. Toyota (+2.3%) follows the market at 10.5% share in third place, with the rest of the Top 8 unchanged on 2004 as Dodge (+0.9%), Honda (+9.1%), Pontiac (+4.9%), Mazda (+5.4%) and GMC (+1%) follow. Hyundai (+10.8%) posts the largest gain in the Top 12 and advances to #9.

Model-wise, the Ford F-Series (-3.1%) holds onto the top spot for less than 1.000 sales above the Honda Civic (+10.3%), with the Dodge Caravan (+2.3%) rounding up the podium and the Mazda3 (+18.8%) snapping the #2 passenger car spot off the Toyota Corolla (+4.4%). The Dodge Ram (-0.6%) advances to #7 above the Chevrolet Silverado (-2.6%), the Ford Focus (-5.4%) is back inside the Top 10 at #9 and the Chevrolet Cobalt (+14734.3%) lands directly at #11 for its first full year of sales.

In 2006, the Canadian new car market gains 2% to 1.615.068 units and Ford (+8.1%) brilliantly reclaims the brands top spot off Chevrolet (-8%) at 14.1% share vs. 12.3% just as Toyota (+10.9%) continues to progress at a record 11.6%. Dodge (+6.3%), Honda (+9.5%), Pontiac (-4.5%) and Mazda (+4%) follow in the same order as 2005 while Hyundai (+7.8%) and Nissan (-5.3%) both overtake GMC (-16%).

The Ford F-Series (+3.7%) wins again and widens the gap with the Honda Civic (+2.2%) to 2.100 units with the Dodge Caravan (-4.8%), Mazda3 (-5.5%) and Toyota Corolla (-5.1%) holding onto their 2005 ranking. The Dodge Ram (+6.3%) becomes the #2 pickup in Canada above the GMC Sierra (-2.1%) and Chevrolet Silverado (-1.4%). They are followed by the Toyota Yaris (+453.7%) inside the Top 10 for its first full year of sales, Chevrolet Cobalt (+20.2%) and Toyota Camry (+48.7%).
