Indonesia 2000-2002: Market back to pre-crisis levels, Suzuki strong

The Toyota Kijang hasn’t been threatened in the Indonesian first place for the past 24 years.

Exceptional year for new car sales in Indonesia with the 1999 volume multiplied by 3.5 (+241.2%) to reach 289.747, the highest since 1996. As expected Toyota (+240%) drives the market growth to a stable 30.4% share, followed this year by Suzuki (+304%) back to #2 above Mitsubishi (+158.9%) while Daihatsu (+209.7%) passes Isuzu (+198.8%) at #4. Kia (+407.5%) is up 5-fold but remains in 6th place while Honda (+682.7%) and Hyundai (+584.1%) post the largest gains in the Top 10. Chevrolet (+197.3%) remains the only Westerner in the Top 10, with BMW (+331.4%) and Mercedes (+235.3%) lurking just below.

The Toyota Kijang (+211.6%) is the best-seller for the 23rd straight year at 24.7% share, well above the Suzuki Carry (+222.3%) back to #2 above the Isuzu Panther (+208.5%) with the Daihatsu Taruma (+195.3%) and Mitsubishi Kuda (+187.4%) rounding up the Top 5. The Toyota Soluna lands directly at #8 while the Kia Sephia (+176.3%) and Suzuki Baleno (+2293.1%) are the only passenger cars in the Top 15.

In 2001, the market takes a breather with a -6.5% year-on-year drop to 270.920 units. Brand leader Toyota (-11.7%) almost doubles the market decline to fall to a still dominant 28.7% share, distancing Suzuki (+15.4%) and Mitsubishi (-19.6%) like in 2000. Isuzu (+6%) is back above Daihatsu (-27.1%) at #5 while Mitsubishi Fuso (+29.3%), Honda (+20.5%), BMW (+20.4%) and Hyundai (+18.8%) all post spectacular gains, BMW becoming the only Westerner in the Top 10.

Model-wise, the Toyota Kijang (-13.6%) is faithful to its traditional top spot, but the Suzuki Carry (+51.7%) gets an impressive boost this year to cement its 2nd place ahead of the Isuzu Panther (+4.4%) while the Mitsubishi L300 (+19.3%), Canter (+29.3%) and T120 (+50.6%) all climb the ladder to #4, #5 and #6 respectively. The Daihatsu Zebra (+22%) is back inside the Top 10 while the Honda CR-V (+293.4%) ends the year just outside.

In 2002, Indonesian new car sales are back up 6.5% to 288.553 units and the entire Top 9 brands are unchanged on last year, with Toyota (+4.5%), Suzuki (+19.4%), Mitsubishi (+21.5%), Isuzu (-15.6%) and Daihatsu (-1.4%) leading the way. There are no Western brands in the Top 10, with Chevrolet (+9.2%) reclaiming the #1 spot at #11 overall above BMW (-31%), Mercedes (-15.7%) and Peugeot (-23.4%). The Toyota Kijang (+5.1%) celebrates 25 consecutive year in the Indonesian pole position, but the Suzuki Carry (+23.9%) continues ti catch up at #2, now holding 16.8% share. They distance the Isuzu Panther (-21%), Mitsubishi T120 (+45.6%), L300 (-11.1%), Fuso Canter (+10.6%) and Kuda (+70.1%).
