New vehicle deliveries in India tilt into negative in 2001 at -3.1% to 729.496 units. Leader Maruti (+5%) has reacted and sees its share rally back to 47.5% but Tata (-5%) can’t say the same and is down slightly to 14.5%. Meanwhile Hyundai (+2%) continues to spread its wings, cementing its third place at 11.4%. Below Mahindra (-4%), Toyota soars 30% to 5th place, overtaking Daewoo (-57%), while Ford (-14%), Fiat (+13%) and Honda (-3%) keep the foreigners total at 6 in the Top 10. A foreign influence that is receding this year, with total sales down faster than the market at -11% and 25.7% share vs. 28% a year ago.

The Maruti Alto is up to #7 for its first full year of sale in India.

Replicating the brand’s reclaimed dynamism, the Maruti 800 (+2%) returns above the symbolic 20% share at 20.6% to sign a 17th consecutive annual win just as the Hyundai Santro (+1%) seems to be curbing its wild run at 9.1% share at #2. The Maruti Zen (-1%) and Omni (-5%) roughly follow the market and complete the Top 4 like last year. The Tata Indica (+6%) has gotten rid of the Mahindra Jeep (-6%) to break into the Top 5 for the first time. The Maruti Alto (+146%) ends its first full year in market at #7, the Toyota Qualis (+30%) is up two spots to #8 and #2 foreigner just as the Daewoo Matiz (-56%) implodes to #12. The Fiat Palio (#19) is the best-selling new launch for 2001.
