UK 1994: Ford Mondeo threatens Ford Escort’s domination

New car sales in the UK are up 8% at 1.909 million registrations, and the fight for the best selling title is heating up this year. The Ford Escort is #1 for the third time in a row and the 11th year in total with 144,089 sales and 7.5% share, up 18%. The Ford Mondeo is closing in at #2 for its first full year of sales, up 3 spots and 44% at 127,144 units and 6.7%.

The Ford Fiesta rounds up a podium 100% Ford and 100% growing, up 12% at 123,723 sales and 6.5% share. Two Vauxhalls follow: the Cavalier (-4%) and Astra (-9%). The Rover 200 stays 6th and reaches what would remain its best volume ever at 80,313 units. The Vauxhall Corsa, launched last year, is up 2 spots and 53% to #7 and the Renault Clio leads foreign models at #9 and 2.6% share, ahead of the Peugeot 306 and 106.

Land Rover Discovery

There are a few newcomers in the Top 30: the Citroen Xantia is up 16 spots to #16 for its first full year of sales with 30,527 units and 1.6%, the Rover 600 is up 15 ranks to #21, launched this year the Fiat Punto lands directly in 23rd place with 22,826 sales, the Renault Laguna appears at #27 and the Land Rover Discovery is up to #28 at 19,744 units and 1% market share.
