Indonesia 1990-1991: Toyota Kijang holds 25% share in record market

The Toyota Kijang 3rd generation is the best-seller in Indonesia.

New car sales in Indonesia gain a splendid 25.5% year-on-year in 1990 to break its volume record established in 1981 at 223.547 units, only the 2nd time in history the annual volume is above the 200.000 mark. Toyota dominates the brands ranking just under 30% share, but Daihatsu (25.1%) and Suzuki (24.3%) aren’t too far off. Honda (5.7%) and Mitsubishi (4%) are the only two other carmaker holding at least 2% of the Indonesian market. One in every 5 new vehicles sold in Indonesia in 1990 is a Toyota Kijang (24.9% share), topping the models ranking above the Daihatsu Zebra (18.4%) and Suzuki Carry (16.3%). The Suzuki Katana and Honda Civic round up the Top 10. The best-selling Western nameplate is the Ford Laser (#12).

In 1991, the Indonesian market edges down -3.5% to 215.644 units, and Toyota (+6.9%) goes against the grain to cement its domination with 33% share vs. 20.3% for Daihatsu (-22%) and 19.8% for Suzuki (21.7%). Mitsubishi (+129.4%) and Isuzu (+233.2%) both post spectacular gains at the tail end of the Top 5 while BMW (+2.1%) and Mazda (+1.5%) inch up but Ford (-43.7%), Honda (-35.7%) and Nissan (-16.2%) struggle. Model-wise, the Toyota Kijang (+8.8%) improves to 28% share whereas the Suzuki Carry (-19.3%) overtakes the Daihatsu Zebra (-32%) for 2nd place and the Mitsubishi T120 and Isuzu Panther land directly into the Top 5.
