The Emirati new car market is up a fantastic 22% year-on-year in July to 29,265 registrations, bringing the year-to-date total to 201,122 units, up an equally impressive 16% on 2012. Toyota monopolises the podium once again this month, but illustrating how tight the race to #1 is so far this year, the models order has completely changed compared to June: in run-out mode here too, the Corolla takes the lead like in Saudi Arabia thanks to 1,736 sales and 5.9%, gaining one spot in the year-to-date ranking in the process to #2. The Land Cruiser is up one rank on June to #2 at 1,609 units and 5.5% and also up one year-to-date to #3, while the Camry rounds up the podium in July but remains #5 year-to-date.

Toyota Prado UAE July 2013The Toyota Prado is the best-selling model so far in 2013 in the UAE. Not for long?

The Toyota Prado is still for now the most popular model in the country so far in 2013 thanks to 10,673 sales and 5.3%, but it only ranks 4th in July and is now only 156 units above the Corolla… Leader in June, the Hilux is down to #5 this month and loses 2 ranks year-to-date to #4. As a reminder let’s note the Corolla was #1 in 2011 and the Hilux dominated in 2012, and it would be a first if the Prado leads the way in the Full Year. Let’s also salute the performances of the Mitsubishi Lancer EX up to #9 vs. #34 year-to-date, the Lexus LX up to #14 vs. #20 and Toyota RAV4 up to #30 vs. #44.

After gaining a huge 54% in June 2012, the Emirati new car market is up a further 5% this June to 26,473 units, adding up to 166,290 registrations year-to-date, up 12% on 2012. In the brands sales charts, Toyota is crowned #1 by far with 36,4% of the market followed by Nissan at 18.3% while Hyundai at 7.6% passes Mitsubishi at 5.1% (but #3 year-to-date at 7.6%). Toyota monopolises the Top 5 spots in the models ranking in June: the Hilux is the king of the Emirates this month thanks to 1,497 sales and 5.7% ahead of the Prado (5.3%), Land Cruiser (4.9%), Corolla (4.4%) and Camry (3.8%), these models being the only ones selling over 1,000 units in June…

Toyota Prado UAE June 2013The Toyota Prado is #1 so far in 2013 in the UAE.

However the year-to-date ranking is different as the race to the title of most popular vehicle in the Emirates is extremely tight this year: only 750 units separate the #1 from the #4, with the Toyota Prado surprisingly leading the way for now at 9,494 units, ahead of the Hilux at 9,136, the Corolla at 8,781 and the Land Cruiser at 8,748. As a reminded let’s note the Corolla was #1 in 2011 and the Hilux dominated in 2012. Back to the June ranking where the Nissan Patrol and D22 are kicked down to #6 and #7 even though they deliver performances higher than their year-to-date levels. There are two more Toyotas in the Top 9 (making it 7 in 9): the Land Cruiser Pick-up at #8 and Hiace at #9. Notice also the BMW X5 up to #13 vs. #22 year-to-date and the Jeep Grand Cherokee up to #21 vs. #38.

Surprisingly down to #4 last month, the Toyota Hilux is back in pole position in February with 1,656 sales and 6%, however this is not enough to get back to #1 year-to-date, far from it… The Toyota Corolla, leader in January but down to #4 this month is still #1 and year-to-date at 3,156 units and 5.6%, whereas the Hilux still lags in 4th place so far in 2013. The Toyota Prado, very strong again in February at #2 with 1,571 sales and 5.7%, and the Toyota Land Cruiser at #3 this month with 1,443 units and 5.2% are still ahead of the Hilux year-to-date.

2013 Nissan Sentra - f3qNissan Sentra

The Ford Edge is up 14 ranks to #17, the Nissan Navara is up 119 spots to #33 and the Nissan Sentra lands directly at #36 with 175 sales and 0.6% for its very first month in market.

Ldman’s Christmas present to BestSellingCarsBlog is November figures for the Gulf Cooperation Council area, one month in advance! So there will be no October updates, only November articles which will integrate October figures and commentaries. Saudi ArabiaKuwaitQatarBahrain, the United Arab Emirates and Oman will all be updated within the next 24 to 48 hours.

United Arab Emirates: Where Ferraris go to die?

This update is brought to you by HSBC.

If you are a regular BSCB reader you will know that the new car market in the United Arab Emirates is up a formidable 29% year-on-year so far in 2012 at 228,702 registrations. HSBC says the main reasons for this growth have been favourable oil prices and stability in the fundamental parts of the economy, as well as an increasing range of cars available. There are however two very interesting and quite unique car sales trends in the UAE that I haven’t covered yet, mainly because they apply to the used car market. The first one is that more and more people in the UAE seem to be buying classic cars (over 30 years old), with 7,000 to 8,000 in the country at the moment. Note the ‘Range of cars’ link is sponsored.

Burj Khalifa, Dubai. Found any abandoned Ferraris lately? Picture by Avatarmin, all rights reserved.

The second trend in the UAE relates to luxurious cars. We know that a lot of African countries are where European cars like the Mercedes 190 go to finish their long and eventful life. But who would have thought the UAE is shaping up to be where Ferraris go to die? Given fuel is cheaper, many expats and UAE nationals do give up to the temption to splash out on their dream car…

Or perhaps a lost Mercedes SLS AMG? Picture by Martijn Beekmans, all rights reserved.

However the turmoil in the international economy has disrupted their owners’ ability to pay for them. UAE law frowns upon debt, so rather than face stiff penalties their owners have fled the city, or even the country, abandoning their cars. If you see a Ferrari lying around unused and unloved (yes you read that right), you’ll know why. When these cars get towed away and if no one has claimed them after 15 days, they go up for auction, giving consumers the chance to take one at a knock down price…

New car sales in the United Arab Emirates are up another flamboyant 35% year-on-year in Septembet to 28,650 units, bringing the year-to-date total to 228,702 units, up 29% on 2011. The Toyota Hilux ranks #1 for the 4th consecutive month and the 6th time this year with 2,120 sales and 7.4% share, adding up 15,382 and 6.7% year-to-date, now with an almost unassailable lead over the Toyota Prado (11,032 units) and the Toyota Land Cruiser (10,996) for the title of UAE’s most popular model in 2012. Exceptional performance of the medium commercial vehicle Fuso Canter, up to #2 this month at 1,244 sales and 4.#. It ranks #5 year-to-date.

Kia Quoris

There are 5 Toyotas in the Top 6 this month like in the 2012 YTD ranking with the Corolla at #5 and 3.8% and the Camry at #6 and 3.5%. The new generation Nissan Sunny is an instant success in the Emirates, pushing the nameplate up 6 ranks on last month to #7 at 785 units and 2.7% share. Other great performers include the Nissan X-Terra up 4 to #18, the Nissan Urvan up 27 to #28, the Hyundai Santa Fe up 80 to #34, the Chevrolet Malibu finally taking off, up 52 spots to #35, the Lexus ES up 11 to #38 and the Ford Figo up 85 to #52.

Infiniti JX35

As far as newcomers are concerned, for its 2nd month of sales in the Emirates the Infiniti JX35 is up to #84 with 68 sales, and in September the Peugeot 208 (7 units), VW Polo (6 sales) Chevrolet Colorado (5 units) and Kia Quoris (2 sales) all make their very first appearance in the Emirati models ranking…
