New car sales in the United Arab Emirates are up a very healthy 16% year-on-year to 27,674 registrations, bringing the year-to-date total to 56,256 units after two months, up 21% on 2012. Surprisingly down to #4 last month, the Toyota Hilux is back in pole position in February with 1,656 sales and 6%, however this is not enough to get back to #1 year-to-date, far from it… The Toyota Corolla, leader in January but down to #4 this month is still #1 and year-to-date at 3,156 units and 5.6%, whereas the Hilux still lags in 4th place so far in 2013. The Toyota Prado, very strong again in February at #2 with 1,571 sales and 5.7%, and the Toyota Land Cruiser at #3 this month with 1,443 units and 5.2% are still ahead of the Hilux year-to-date.

2013 Nissan Sentra - f3qNissan Sentra

After the X6 last month it’s the turn of the BMW X5 to shine: it is up a fantastic 40 spots on last month to land at #14 with 461 sales and 1.7%. Note the X5 is the best-selling non-Japanese model in the country this month! The Ford Edge is up 14 ranks to #17, the Nissan Navara is up 119 spots to #33 and the Nissan Sentra lands directly at #36 with 175 sales and 0.6% for its very first month in market.

In January the Emirati new car market grows at exactly the same rate year-on-year as over the Full Year 2012: +27% to 28,682 registrations. Like in Saudi Arabia, the Toyota Corolla takes the lead of the models ranking this month thanks to 1,742 sales and 6.1%, potentially due to the current generation hitting runout mode in the wake of the arrival of the new model later in the year. The Toyota Prado is also very strong, up 3 spots on December to #2 at 1,453 units and 5.1%, while the Toyota Land Cruiser rounds up the podium with 1,405 sales and 4.9%.

#1 in 2012, the Toyota Hilux is surprisingly down to 4th place this month at 1,162 units and 4.1%. Notice also the Mitsubishi L200 up 3 spots on December to #6, the Mitsubishi Pajero up 6 to #8, the BMW X6 up a huge 56 ranks to #22, Nissan Micra up 70 to #24, Toyota FJ Cruiser up 65 to #32, Kia Cerato up 53 to #33 and the Toyota Avalon up from outside the Top 200 in December to #67 this month thanks to the new generation of the model.

New vehicle sales in the United Arab Emirates are up 27% year-on-year both in December at 26,846 registrations and over the Full Year 2012 at 310,287. If  in 2011 the Toyota Corolla snatched a last minute pole position thanks to Thai flood-related Toyota Hilux stock shortage issues, this year the Hilux is well and truly the boss, up 74% to 19,904 sales and 6.4% and holding the monthly top spot 8 times. The Hilux was the only vehicle to manage to go above 2,000 monthly sales this year and did it 4 times, peaking at 2,120 units in September. The Toyota Land Cruiser is up one spot and 27% to #2 at 13,979 units and 4.5%, it ranked #1 in May. Leader in 2011, the Toyota Corolla is down two ranks to #3 with 13,908 sales and 4.5% and topped the monthly ranking twice: in January and September.

Ford Edge UAE 2012Ford Edge

Excellent year for the Toyota Prado, up 51% to #4 at 13,651 units and 4.4%, it even managed to rank #1 in April. The Fuso Canter impresses at +66% and #5, the Nissan Patrol is up 33% to #8, Toyota Land Cruiser Pick-up up 86% to #9, Nissan Sunny N17 up 297% to #17, Hyundai Accent up 204% to #20 (and the only non-Japanese model in the Top 20!), Hyundai Elantra up 156% to #22, Ford Edge up 115% to #27, Nissan X-Terra up 100% to #32 and Kia Rio up 136% to #43.

United Arab Emirates: Where Ferraris go to die?

December 7th, 2012 1 comment

This update is brought to you by HSBC.

If you are a regular BSCB reader you will know that the new car market in the United Arab Emirates is up a formidable 29% year-on-year so far in 2012 at 228,702 registrations. HSBC says the main reasons for this growth have been favourable oil prices and stability in the fundamental parts of the economy, as well as an increasing range of cars available. There are however two very interesting and quite unique car sales trends in the UAE that I haven’t covered yet, mainly because they apply to the used car market. The first one is that more and more people in the UAE seem to be buying classic cars (over 30 years old), with 7,000 to 8,000 in the country at the moment. Note the ‘Range of cars’ link is sponsored.

Burj Khalifa, Dubai. Found any abandoned Ferraris lately? Picture by Avatarmin, all rights reserved.

The second trend in the UAE relates to luxurious cars. We know that a lot of African countries are where European cars like the Mercedes 190 go to finish their long and eventful life. But who would have thought the UAE is shaping up to be where Ferraris go to die? Given fuel is cheaper, many expats and UAE nationals do give up to the temption to splash out on their dream car…

Or perhaps a lost Mercedes SLS AMG? Picture by Martijn Beekmans, all rights reserved.

However the turmoil in the international economy has disrupted their owners’ ability to pay for them. UAE law frowns upon debt, so rather than face stiff penalties their owners have fled the city, or even the country, abandoning their cars. If you see a Ferrari lying around unused and unloved (yes you read that right), you’ll know why. When these cars get towed away and if no one has claimed them after 15 days, they go up for auction, giving consumers the chance to take one at a knock down price…
