The 4th generation (on sale later this year) should help the Clio nameplate stay #1 in Slovenia

It looks like the Slovenian new car market is taking the direction of other Southern European markets like Greece, Spain and Portugal, with sales down an abysmal 26% year-on-year in August to just 3,072 registrations, bringing the year-to-date total to 35,504, down 15% on 2011. Away from the top since May, the Renault Clio reclaims its traditional leadership this month thanks to 164 sales for a 5.3% share. It therefore reinforces its 2012 year-to-date pole position at 2,043 units and 5.8%.

Kia Cee’d

Volkswagen lodges an excellent month in Slovenia and places the Polo at #2 with 116 sales and 3.8% (#3 year-to-date) and the Golf at #3 with 102 units and 3.3% (#4 year-to-date), while the Renault Megane is down two spots to #4 and 2.9% but stays #2 year-to-date at 4.4%. Exceptional performance of the Kia Cee’d up a further 3 ranks to #5 with 89 sales and 2.9% vs. #13 and 1.8% year-to-date. The Peugeot 208 continues to gear up, now ranking #7 at 76 units and 2.5%.

Skoda Yeti

Notice also the Chevrolet Aveo up 11 spots to #10, the Skoda Yeti stable at an outstanding 12th place vs. #40 year-to-date, the Nissan Juke up 17 ranks to #14, the Fiat Panda up 7 to #15, the Citroen C4 Picasso up 23 to #16, the VW Up! up 6 to #20, the Ford C-Max up 12 to #22, the Mercedes B-Class up 26 to #24, the Mazda CX-5 breaking into the Slovenian Top 50 for the first time at #46 and the BMW X5 landing at #50. The Renault Scenic, #1 for the first time in the country last month, is down to #33.

Slovenian car sales stay at a level way inferior as last year in July, down 13% year-on-year to 4,105 registrations and bringing the year-to-date total to 32,432 units, down 14% on 2011. Big surprise on top: the Renault Scenic grabs the pole position of the models ranking for the first time ever in the country thanks to 224 sales for an outstanding 5.5% market share. It is now #9 year-to-date at 2% share vs. #16 in 2011.

#1 last month, the Renault Megane is kicked down to second place with a still very respectable 213 units and 5.2% share, above its 2012 year-to-date level of 4.5%. The Renault Clio, traditional leader in Slovenia, is down one spot to #3 with 194 sales and 4.7% but stays in the top spot year-to-date with 1,879 sales and 5.8%. And yes you have read it right, Renault monopolises the Slovenian podium in July with the Scenic, Megane and Clio! A feat it has only achieved once in the last 14 years in France, let alone internationally…

Other great performers this month include the Ford Focus up 17 spots on June to #6, the Kia Cee’d up 3 to #8, the Peugeot 208 breaking into the Slovenian Top 10 for the first time, up 14 ranks to #10, the Skoda Yeti up 32 to #12, the Citroen C3 up 20 to #14, the Hyundai ix35 up 22 to #16, the Renault Kangoo up 30 to #18 and the Citroen DS3 up to a best-ever #24 with 47 sales and 1.1% share.

New car sales in Slovenia are not looking good this year, down 14% year-on-year both in June at 4,980 registrations and year-to-date at 28,327 units. For the first time since August 2011 and the second time in the last 12 months the Renault Megane is the best-selling model in Slovenia, and thanks to 339 sales it hits its highest ever market share in the country at 6.8%. It is however still #2 year-to-date with 1,258 units and 4.4% behind the Renault Clio at 1,685 and 5.9%.

Excellent month for the Opel Astra, up 7 spots on May to land on the podium at #3 with 176 sales and 3.5%, ahead of the VW Polo at 163 units and 3.3%. The Renault Scenic delivers an outstanding month, up 13 ranks to #5 with 158 sales and 3.2%, as does the Fiat Panda also up 13 spots to #7 and the BMW 3 Series maintaining itself within the Slovenian Top 10 for the second consecutive month at #10.

Notice also the VW Up! up 12 ranks to a best-ever #15, the Opel Insignia up 13 to #16, the Renault Twingo up 22 to #17 and the Citroen C4 Picasso up a further 3 spots on an already excellent month of May to #18 vs. #32 year-to-date. After the Citroen DS4 ranked 41st in May, its little sister the Citroen DS3 is up to #27 this month with a best-ever 53 sales and 1.1% share.

The Slovenian car market is down a worrying 15% year-on-year in May to 4,660 registrations, bringing the year-to-date total to 23,347 units, down 14% on 2011. The podium is unchanged on last month, the 2012 year-to-date ranking and the Full Year 2011 ranking: the Renault Clio leads the way with 361 sales and a shiny 7.7% market share, ahead of the Renault Megane at 4.8% and the VW Polo at 3.5%, now ex-aequo with the Skoda Octavia for the third place. Below the VW Golf at #5, the Kia Rio lodges another very impressive month in Slovenia at #6 with 125 sales and 2.7% share.

But the best performer this month is the BMW 3 Series, boosted by its new generation and up 6 spots on April to #9 with 119 units and 2.6% while two months ago it wasn’t even in the Top 70! It is now #31 year-to-date at 233 sales and 1%. Other great performers this month include the Citroen Berlingo up 14 ranks to #7, the Mercedes B-Class up from outside the Top 50 to #15, the Fiat Panda up 30 spots to #20, the Citroen C4 Picasso up 22 to #21 and the Peugeot 208 up 12 to #22.

Slovenia April 2012: Clio & Megane lead, Kia Rio up to best-ever #5

Car sales in Slovenia continue to slide down at -13% year-on-year in April to 4,362 units, bringing the year-to-date total to 18,687 registrations, down 14% on 2011. For the first time this year, two Renaults dominate the models ranking: the Clio leads as usual with 239 sales and 5.5% and is followed by the Megane at 222 units and 5.1% while the VW Polo rounds up the podium with 178 sales and 4.1%. This is how the podium used to look like in Slovenia, at least over the Full Year 2011. Year-to-date in 2012 the Polo is still #2.

I know I’m starting to sound like a broken record, mentioning the Kia Rio in every Slovenian post, but the fact is the little Korean is delivering outstanding results in the country since the launch of the new generation and this month it reaches its best ranking ever in Slovenia in 5th place, its highest volume at 132 units and its strongest market share at 3%! I’m sure you’ll agree it would have been unfair not to mention it!

BMW 3 Series

Other great performers this month include the Nissan Qashqai up 28 spots on March to #12, the BMW 3 Series up from literally nowhere (at least outside the Top 70) to #15, the Renault Kangoo up 55 ranks to #17, the VW Up! up 3 to a best-ever 22nd place, the Skoda Superb up 24 to #26, the Peugeot 208 landing directly at #34 for its very first month of sales with 45 units sold and the BMW X3 up 16 spots to #48.

Slovenian car sales are not having the best of time in this start of 2012, down 12% year-on-year to 5,186 registrations, with the first Quarter of 2012 down 14% at 14,325 units. The Renault Clio still reigns: it is #1 for the 10th time in the last 12 months with 274 sales and 5.3% and 844 and 5.9% year-to-date. The VW Polo confirms it is a serious threat for the 2nd spot the Renault Megane has traditionally held, with 210 units this month vs. 209 for the Megane, both models at 4% share. The Polo is #2 year-to-date with 527 sales and 3.7% vs. 472 and 3.3% for the Megane.

Other great performers this month include the Kia Rio, nicely stuck in the Top 10 for the last 4 consecutive months at #8 vs.#68 in 2011, the Chevrolet Aveo at #15 vs.#25 in 2011, the Kia Sportage at #18 vs.#33, the VW Up! up 9 spots to #25, the Mercedes B-Class up 16 to #26, the Ford C-Max up 28 to #27 and the Peugeot 3008 up 25 to #28.

Car sales are not moving in the right direction in Slovenia, down 22% year-on-year in February to 4,128 registrations, bringing the year-to-date total to 9,139 units, down 15% on 2011. The Renault Clio unsurprisingly takes the lead with 244 sales and 5.9%, followed by the VW Polo up one spot to #2 at 144 units and 3.5%. This month’s best performer is the Citroen Berlingo, up 10 spots on January to land in third position with 133 sales and 3.2% and now #6 year-to-date.

Nissan Note

The Skoda Fabia also shines, up 4 ranks to #4 and #5 year-to-date vs. #12 in 2011. The VW Golf falls down from #2 in January to #5 this month, ahead of the Hyundai i30 up 9 spots to #6 and the Renault Megane in difficulty at #7. The Kia Rio continues to impress at #8 and other great performers this month include the Citroen C4 Picasso up to #21, Nissan Juke up to #25, Nissan Note up to #29 and VW Up! directly landing at #34 with 43 sales for its first month in the country.

Slovenia January 2012: VW Golf and Kia Rio in great shape

Kia Rio (US version)

Car sales in Slovenia are off to a relatively slow start in January at 5,011 registrations, down 8% year-on-year. The Renault Clio is faithful to its traditional pole position with 326 sales and 6.5% share while the VW Golf is up a very healthy 8 spots on December to land at #2 with 202 units and 4%, its highest share in the country in one year. The VW Polo rounds up the podium like in the Full Year 2011 ranking with 173 sales and 3.5%.

Whereas the Renault Megane and Opel Astra are in sharp decline compared to last month, the new generation Kia Rio manages to maintain itself within the Slovenian Top 6 for the 2nd month in a row thanks to 109 units sold for a 2.2% market share vs. 0.4% over 2011. Other good performers in January include the VW Passat up to #7, Skoda Fabia up to #8, Peugeot 308 up to #10, VW Touran up to #12, Kia Sportage up to #14, VW Tiguan up to #19 and the locally produced Renault Twingo up to #21.

Slovenia December 2011: New Kia Rio & Chevrolet Aveo in Top 10 Full Year 2011: Renault Clio leads for 14th consecutive year

The Slovenian car market is down 4% in December to 3,280 units, bringing the final 2011 total to 58,417 registrations, down 3%. In December, the Opel Astra is up to #2, the Kia Rio up 7 spots to #6 with 80 sales and 2.4% share, the Chevrolet Aveo lodges its 2nd month in a row in the Top 10 at #9 with 76 units and 2.3% and the Opel Zafira Tourer has a fantastic first month of sales in Slovenia, landing directly at #18 with 53 sales and 1.6%.

Opel Zafira Tourer

Over the full year 2011, no surprises in pole position: the Renault Clio takes the top spot with 3,806 sales and 6.5%, down 5%. I know for sure that the Renault Clio has been the best-selling car in Slovenia since 2003 but I estimate its reign to have started in 1998 when production of the 2nd generation started in the country. Therefore it should be the 14th consecutive year the Clio is #1!

Renault Clio

In fact the entire Top 5 is unchanged on 2010…a bit boring. The Renault Megane is #2 at 2,644 units and 4.5% (-5%), followed by the VW Polo (-6%), VW Golf (-21%) and Opel Astra (-22%). The Opel Corsa is up 2 spots to #6 while the Skoda Octavia is up 8 ranks and 11% to #7.

Further down the 2011 ranking, notice the VW Passat up 86% to #14, Opel Meriva up 59% to #20, Citroen C4 up 123% to #26, Ford Kuga up 175% to #31 and Dacia Duster up 218% to #35. The all-new Hyundai ix20 lands directly at #41 with 440 units and 0.8% share.
