Luxembourg 2001-2003: VW Golf in the lead

Car sales in Luxembourg are dominated by the VW Golf over the period, selling 2,475 units in 2001, 2,159 in 2002 and 2,048 in 2003. The 2nd place changes hands each year: from the Peugeot 206 in 2001 at 1,769 sales to the Peugeot 307 in 2002 at 2,116 units to the Renault Megane in 2003 at 1,829 sales.

Notice the excellent hold of the BMW 3 Series all through the period: #3 at 1,668 units in 2001, #4 with 1,651 sales in 2002 and #5 at 1,379 units in 2002. Other popular models include the Mercedes C Class #4 in 2001, VW Polo #5 in 2001 and Audi A4 #5 in 2002.

Belgium 1996: VW Polo up to #2, Renault Megane #4

While the pole position is no surprise this year in Belgium – the VW Golf leads by far with 23,709 sales and 5.5% share – it’s the rest of the models ranking that is full of unexpected events… The VW Polo shoots up to 2nd place at 16,090 units and 3.8%, making the 1996 Belgian models ranking a 1-2 Volkswagen. The Opel Astra is kicked down to third position with 15,774 sales and 3.7%.

Renault Megane

Instant success for the Renault Megane directly at #4 with 15,361 units and 3.6%, ahead of the Ford Fiesta, Escort and Mondeo. Other great performing models include the Opel Vectra at #9, the Audi A4 at #10, the Peugeot 406 at #16, the Mercedes E-Class at #18, BMW 5 Series at #24 and Audi A6 at #26.

Belgium 1994: VW Golf leads, Ford Mondeo up to #4

(Note these figures include Luxembourg) Traditionally relatively stable, the Belgian Top 10 best-sellers are turned upside down this year. Except for the first two spots still occupied by the VW Golf, improving further at 24,659 sales and 5.9% and the Opel Astra with 18,264 units and 4.4%. The Ford Escort is up 2 spots to land on the third step of the podium thanks to 13,601 sales and 3.3%, while its big brother the Ford Mondeo is up a huge 17 ranks to #4 at 12,966 units and 3.1% for its first full year of sales in the country. The Renault 19 is down 2 spots to #5.

Peugeot 306

There are two other newcomers in this year’s Top 10 favourite models: the Peugeot 306 is up 14 ranks to #9 with 10,939 sales and 2.6% while the Citroen Xantia is up 16 to #10 at 10,695 units and 2.6% also. Notice the BMW 3 Series up one to #11, the Mercedes C-Class landing at #21, the Renault Laguna at #22, the Renault Twingo up 123% to #23 and the Fiat Punto at #27.

Belgium 1993: VW Golf, Opel Astra and Renault 19 on podium

(Note these sales figures include Luxembourg) Following the order that characterised Belgium car sales in the eighties, the VW Golf is the best-selling model in the country in 1993 with 23,118 sales and 5.7% ahead of the Opel Astra which has replaced the Kadett in the hearts of Belgian consumers, #2 this year at 18,768 units and 4.6%. The Renault 19 rounds up the podium with 15,017 sales and 3.7%, followed by the Ford Fiesta, Ford Escort and Renault Clio.

Audi 80

The Toyota Corolla lodges an excellent 8th place with 10,732 units and 2.6%, the Audi 80/90 shines at #10 and 10,440 sales, the BMW 3 Series ranks #12, the Toyota Carina is at a very solid 13th position and the Nissan Sunny at #17 makes it 3 Japanese models in the Belgian Top 20 (there are 11 in the Top 50). Notice also the VW Vento at a strong #18 and the Renault Safrane at #22.
