Very rare appearance of Lithuania on BSCB! Over the first 8 months of 2012, 9,210 new cars found a buyer in the country, down 7% on 2011. August is down a more worrying 15% year-on-year to 1,072 registrations. Model-wise, in August the Fiat 500 is the most popular model in Lithuania with 55 sales and 5.1% share…

Peugeot 208

… followed by the Peugeot 208 at its highest in the world outside of France with 48 units and 4.5% and the Opel Astra at 40 sales and 3.7%. Brand-wise, Volkswagen dominates with close to 15% market share, ahead of Toyota at 10.4% and Fiat & Skoda both at 7.6%.

Lithuania Full Year 2011: Nissan Qashqai in pole position

January 8th, 2012 5 comments

Nissan Qashqai

* See the Top 3 best-selling models by clicking on the title! More info will follow shortly *

Very first information given by Lithianian website Auto Tyrimai gives a 69% rise for car sales in the country, at 15,058 registrations including Commercial Vehicles. The Nissan Qashqai is the best-selling model in Lithuania in 2011 with 900 units sold, up a massive 107%. Lithuania should be the only country in the world this year where the Qashqai is #1.

Fiat 500

It is followed by the Fiat 500, a newcomer in the Top 10 and up at least 300% this year… a pretty impressive feat by the posh Fiat, and its highest ranking anywhere in the world, better than its 4th place in Italy albeit with very different volumes. Leader in 2010, the Peugeot 3008 is down to #3 this year with 572 sales, still up 25% however.

September 12th, 2011 No comments

Peugeot 3008

* Now updated with the Top 10 best-selling models, many thanks to Florian for the tip! *

The Lithuanian car market is up 6% in 2010 to 7,970 units but most models in the Top 10 see their sales improve by much more. Lithuania is the first and only country in the world to reward the Peugeot 3008 with the best-selling car title with 456 units sold and 5.7% market share for its first full year of sales.

Even though it is up 61% on 2009, the Nissan Qashqai stays #2 at 434 units, followed by the Renault Megane which loses its pole position and 32% to 358 sales. Notice the Subaru Outback up 198% at #6 and the VW Tiguan up 187% at #10.

Lithuania June 2010: Yeti roars

November 7th, 2010 No comments

The Lithuanian car market has been severely hit by the economic crisis: after dropping by 66% in 2009, it contracts by another 26% over the 1st Semester 2010 at 3,553 sales, and by 22% in June at 723 sales.

Given the small size of the market, the models ranking is very volatile and in June the Skoda Yeti takes the lead with 49 units sold and a 6.8% market share. #2 is the Nissan Qashqai at 5.5% and #3 is the Skoda Octavia at 5.3% of the market.

The Lithuanian car market is really affected by the economic crisis: down 66% on 2008 at 7,515 registrations. But like in Estonia, one model makes a joke of this drop by gaining 411% year-on-year and multiplying its market share by 14: the Renault Megane, best-seller in Lithuania in 2009 with 526 sales and 7% share.

The Nissan Qashqai stays 2nd and improves its share to 3.6% thanks to ‘only’ 60% less sales than last year at 269 units. #1 for the last two years, the Skoda Octavia falls to #3 with 254 sales, down 79%. It is followed by the Toyota Avensis (-62%), Toyota Auris (-54%) and Peugeot 308 (-63%). Notice the Renault Scenic up 123% to #7.

USSR 1989-1991: VAZ (Lada) and Izh most popular brands

January 30th, 1992 No comments

Lada 2105

* See the Top 8 all-brands ranking by clicking on the title! Many thanks to Alex *

The last years of existence of the Soviet Union see new car sales stagnate in the region: down 6% to 710,525 registrations in 1989 and up 0.1% in 1990 to 711,454. Sales to state organisations, intelligence services and the army are more on a rollercoaster: down 15% to 141,700 in 1989 and back up a massive 59% in 1990 to 225,446.

Izh 2125 Kombi

As expected VAZ (Lada) is the most popular brand in the country with 381,594 sales and 53.7% share in 1989, then 373,579 and 52.5% in 1990. It is followed by Izh at 133,750 then 127,503 and ZAZ at 92,768 then 86,732. The Moskvich 2141 Aleko is counted as a model given it now forms the entirety of the Moskvich range and sales are up 318% to 62,675 and 8.8% in 1989 for its first full year in market, then down 18% to 51,429 in 1990.

Note that in 1989, Soviet citizens were allowed to purchase the UAZ 3151 Patriot again, it was previously only delivered to the army and police. Car imports kick started in the USSR on March 16, 1988 but no data is available until 1990 when a significant 37,400 units were sold, this figure going up 51% in 1991 to 56,300…
