At 152,884 registrations, the Hungarian car market is starting to feel the effects of the economic crisis, down 14% on 2007. For the fourth consecutive year, the Suzuki Swift is the best-selling car in the country but this year its sales fall by a worrying 45% to 8,684 units or 5.7% market share. Suzuki Splash
The Opel Astra Classic continues its prolonged life, now 10 years on since its original launch, and gains one spot on 2007 to reappear on the podium at 5,914 units and 3.9%. It is followed by the Ford Focus at 3.8%, the Opel Astra new gen at 3.7% and the new Suzuki of the year: the Splash, making a… splash already and landing directly in 6th place with 5,046 sales and 3.3% for its very first year on sale.

Suzuki Swift

The Suzuki Swift, built in the country, is the best selling car in Hungary for the 2nd year in a row in 2006 with 16,080 sales and 8.6% of the market, ahead of the Skoda Fabia at 10,127 sales and 5.4%. They are the only two cars to be above 10,000 units sold.
Two other Suzukis are in the Top 5: the Ignis at #3 and the SX4 at #5.

Suzuki Swift

For its first full year of sales in its country of production, the all-new Suzuki Swift lands directly in the top spot in Hungary in 2005! It sells 15,703 units, just enough to put it on the models ranking’s throne. The Suzuki Ignis is down 20% to #2 with 15,281 sales and the Skoda Fabia stays #3 at 11,642 units, down 7%.
The Opel Astra, renamed Astra Classic with the arrival of the new generation sold at the same time, is down 15% to #4, followed by the Ford Focus and Fiesta.

Suzuki Ignis

Building on an excellent start in 2003, the locally produced Suzuki Ignis becomes the best-selling car in Hungary in 2004 thanks to sales up 58% year-on-year to 19,005 units, still to this date the highest volume achieved in Hungary by any model in a single year.
The Opel Astra grabs the 2nd spot with 13,358 sales, up 12% ahead of the Skoda Fabia, down 2 spots to #3 and 12,564 units (+4%). The Chevrolet Kalos is up 4 ranks to #4 with 8,294 sales, up 22% and is followed by the Opel Corsa (-20%), Renault Megane (+5%) and VW Polo (-14%).

Skoda Fabia

Suzukis traditionally dominate the Hungarian car market so this is a very rare occurrence: the Skoda Fabia is the best-selling model in the country in 2003 thanks to sales up a massive 35% on 2003 at 12,087 units. It is however only 81 units above the Suzuki Ignis, already #2 at 12,006 sales for its first year of sales in Hungary!
The Opel Astra, up 40% to 11,882 units, stays #3 and is followed by last year’s leader the Suzuki Wagon R+, down 3 spots to #4 in spite of stable sales at 10,217 units. The Opel Corsa is up 74% and one rank to #5, ahead of the Peugeot 206 and VW Polo.

After the Swift at the end of the nineties, the Suzuki Wagon R+ becomes the best-selling car in Hungary in 2002 with 10,209 units sold. It is followed by the Skoda Fabia at 8,985 sales and the Opel Astra at 8,505 units. The Peugeot 206 ranks 4th, ahead of the Renault Thalia and Opel Corsa.

The Hungarian car market is very dynamic over the period, going from 103,900 registrations in 1998 to 129,100 in 1999 (+24%). The Suzuki Swift, built in the country, is by far the best-selling car in the country with an enormous 22.9% share in 98 thanks to 23,788 sales, improving to 23.5% and 30,335 units in 99… The Opel Astra/Zafira is also extremely strong at 12.5% in 98 and 11.7% in 99.
At much more modest levels, the Ford Escort/Focus rounds up the podium in both years at 4.6% then 4.2% share, followed by the VW Polo (4.2%) and Fiat Bravo/a/Marea (3.4%) in 98, then the VW Golf/Bora/Vento (3.8%) and Skoda Felicia (3.7%) in 99. Notice the Daewoo Matiz bursting into the Hungarian market in 99: it lands directly at #8 with 3,610 sales and 2.8% share. Other newcomers that year are the Peugeot 206 at #14 and the Toyota Yaris at #15.
