This is the third year we are able to report on Swaziland new car sales, thanks to our partnership with South African outlets Lightstone and NAAMSA. Swaziland is one of the smallest countries in Africa, neighboured by Mozambique and South Africa and home to 1.1 million inhabitants. Toyota remains the most popular carmaker in the country in 2016, but Isuzu overtakes Ford to rank #2 overall, while Chevrolet passes Nissan to rank #4. Mazda jumps four spots on 2015 to land in 6th position, and Opel breaks into the Top 10 at #10.

The Chevrolet Cruze is the best-selling passenger car in Swaziland in 2016.

Model-wise, after relinquishing the models top spot to the Toyota Hilux last year, the Isuzu KB is back to #1 in 2016 with 257 sales vs. 224 for the Hilux, with the Ford Ranger completing a podium composed at 100% of pickup trucks. The Toyota Quantum and Chevrolet Utility make the Top Five 100% commercials, like in 2015. In the passenger cars ranking, the Chevrolet Cruze soars from #9 to #1 and the Toyota Fortuner from #3 to #2, both knocking the Toyota Corolla (-48%) down from #1 in 2015 to #3 this year. The Mazda CX-5, CX-3 and Chevrolet Trailblazer all break into the Top 10 to #5, #7 and #8 respectively.

The Mazda CX-3 ranks 7th in the passenger cars charts this year. The Chevrolet Trailblazer is #8 among passenger cars.

For only the second time ever on BSCB and thanks to NAAMSA, we can share with you official data for Swaziland, one of the smallest countries in Africa, neighboured by Mozambique and South Africa and home to 1.1 million inhabitants. Rankings by brand, passenger car models and overall light vehicles are available, yet Mercedes was removed from the study due to its irregular data reporting. Note these rankings only include the models exported from South Africa and reported to NAAMSA and thus may not represent the entirety of the Swaziland market but are very close as a very large majority of new vehicles sold in Swaziland are imported from South Africa. Toyota stays #1, Ford is up two spots to #2 above Isuzu (-1) and Nissan (+2%), Mazda enters the Top 10.

Toyota Quantum Swaziland 2015The Toyota Quantum ranks 4th in Swaziland in 2015.

Looking at the year-on-year evolution of the best-selling models, the Swaziland market has suffered a painful blow in 2015. The market crown changes hands this year: it is now held by the Toyota Hilux, despite sales down 31% to 236 units. #1 in 2014, the Isuzu KB implodes at -66% but only drops one place to #2, while the Ford Ranger is up two ranks thanks to sales down just 11%. The Toyota Corolla (#6 overall) is now the best-selling passenger car in the country – it was #5 in 2014 – followed by the Toyota Etios and Fortuner, while the Chevrolet Cruze, #1 passenger car in 2014, is down to #9. The Toyota RAV4, Corolla Quest and Hyundai Grand i10 also break into the Passenger Cars Top 10.

Now updated with sales figures for the Top 5 passenger cars and light vehicles.

For the first time on BSCB and thanks to NAAMSA I can share with you official information on the best-selling brands and models in Swaziland. This is one of the smallest countries in Africa, neighboured by Mozambique to its east and by South Africa to its north, west and south and home to 1.1 million inhabitants. Rankings by brand, passenger car models and overall light vehicles are available and show some very significant variations compared to the South African market. Note these rankings only include the models exported from South Africa and reported to NAAMSA and thus may not represent the entirety of the Swaziland market but are very close as a very large majority of new vehicles sold in Swaziland are imported from South Africa.

Chevrolet Cruze Swaziland 2014The Chevrolet Cruze is the best-selling passenger car in Swaziland in 2014.

Toyota is the best-selling manufacturer followed by Isuzu and Chevrolet, with Mahindra surprisingly finding its way up to #7. The models podium is monopolised by Light Commercial Vehicles: the Isuzu KB, in a rare exploit, frankly outsells the Toyota Hilux for #1 overall at 587 sales vs. 340 with the Toyota Quantum (aka Hiace) at #3. The Ford Ranger ranks 5th overall and the Mahindra Bolero #10. In the passenger cars ranking, the Chevrolet Cruze is king (169 units), followed by the Toyota Etios and Kia Rio. The Korean manufacturer also places the Sportage and the Picanto inside the Top 10.

Lesotho/Swaziland: Toyota Hilux and VW Polo Vivo should lead

VW Polo Vivo

We welcome countries #158 and #159 on BestSellingCarsBlog: Lesotho and Swaziland.

I could not find any official data for these two countries landlocked by South Africa. In this context, the best-selling models there are most likely very similar and follow the same evolution as the ones in South Africa, namely the Toyota Hilux, VW Polo Vivo, Toyota Corolla and VW Polo.

For this reason I have decided to link the Lesotho and Swaziland posts directly to the South Africa category.

You can see the monthly South African best-selling models here.
