The Luxembourg new car market is up a solid 18% year-on-year in January to 4.108 units. The models podium is reshuffled this month: #2 over the Full Year 2016, the Renault Clio takes the lead this month thanks to sales up a mammoth 168% to 166 and 4% share. The Clio knocked the 2016 #1, the VW Golf, down to #2 with “just” 36% more than January 2016. The Audi A3 (+47%) rounds up the podium like it did last year. As it is the case in almost all of Europe, the new generation pushes the VW Tiguan to unseen territories: up 280% year-on0year in Luxembourg to rank #4. With the VW Polo ranking at #7, we have no less than four Volkswagen Group models inside the Top 5. We have a few surprises further down the ranking: the Mercedes GLC pops up at a brilliant 6th p;lace, the BMW 4 Series is #8 and the Volvo V40 #9.

Volkswagen leads the market again but with sales down 10% to 5.816 units it is now under intense pressure from BMW, up a flamboyant 14% and two spots on 2014 to land at an impressive 2nd place with 5.465 deliveries. BMW places no less than three nameplates inside the 2015 Top 10 – more than any other carmakers – with the big surprise being the 4 Series up to a world-best 5th place thanks to 886 salses. The 3 Series is #9 and the 1 Series #10.

New car sales in Luxembourg are up a reassuring 7% year-on-year in 2014 to 49,793 registrations, and Volkswagen keeps the lead of the brands ranking with 12.9% share. Helped by the success of the Captur, up to #7 this year, Renault is up two spots and 16% on 2013 to reclaims the 2nd spot it held in 2012 with just above 10% share. Audi is up 3% and BMW up 7% but both manufacturers are down one rank to #3 and #4 respectively, above Mercedes. Notice also Peugeot up 13% to 6th place. One very interesting particularity of the Luxembourg new car market is the extremely high prevalence of station wagons, accounting for just under 40% of all sales in 2014, thus competing for the title of most station wagon-friendly market in the world.

VW Golf Luxembourg 2014. Picture courtesy of largus.frThe VW Golf is the best-selling nameplate in Luxembourg in 2014.

Even more impressive, whereas the entire world is defecting from station wagons to SUVs, the station wagon market share was only 20% in Luxembourg a decade ago… In the models ranking, the VW Golf holds onto its crown as it does in neighbouring Belgium, Netherlands and Germany, ahead of the Audi A3 and Renault Scénic, making for a unique mix of German and French influences. The country’s wealth is clearly visible in the Top 10 best-selling models, with the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes A-Class also present. Note Renault places four nameplates inside the Top 8: the Scénic, Clio, Captur and Mégane  – a stronger performance than at home in France (4 in the Top 9).

New car sales in Luxembourg are down 7% year-on-year in 2013 to just 46,624 registrations, its lowest level in 10 years after hitting an all-time record in 2008 at 52,359. Only a brands ranking is available for this country for now, if you have access to models data please make sure you get in touch by commenting on here! The podium is back to being 100% German this year, with Volkswagen still by far the most popular carmaker with sales down 10% to an estimated 6,072 units – both my sources display 6,721 which is actually VW’s 2012 sales figure…

It is followed by Audi at 4,696 units and an outstanding 10.1% share and BMW up one spot but down 7% to #3 and 4,480 sales. In fact, below Renault down a harsh 11% to #4, Mercedes is up one spot and 2% to #5 with 3,333 sales and 7.1% share, making it 3 premium German brands in the Luxembourg Top 5 this year, adding up to a gargantuan 26.8% market share! Notice also Peugeot down 31%, Citroen down 19%, Fiat up 32% and Nissan up 25%.

New car sales are struggling in Luxembourg, down 8% halfway through 2013 to 26,409 registrations, dragged down by a horrid month of June down 13% to 4,320 units. Volkswagen keeps the lead of the brands ranking but loses one percentage point at 3,251 sales and 12.3%. Compared to the Full Year 2012 ranking, BMW and Audi both pass Renault to land in 2nd place with 2,587 units and 9.8% and third position at 2,569 units and 9.7% respectively, leaving Renault at #4 and 9%. Mercedes is up one rank to #5 and 7% share as is Citroen up to #6 and 5.2%.

Luxembourg September 2012: BMW in pole position!

BMW 1 Series

* See the Top 20 best-selling brands by clicking on the title! *

Still no models info available for Luxembourg (if you have any please get in touch!) but the brands ranking in September is eventful enough to warrant an update here. The new car market in Luxembourg resists well in September at just -4% year-on-year to 3,340 registrations, bringing the year-to-date total to 39,090 units, down 1% on 2011. While Volkswagen keeps the lead by far over 9 months with 5,032 sales and 13.2% share, in September BMW is the most popular brand in Luxembourg thanks to an astounding 555 units and 16.6% share!

This could be explained by a combination of weak Golf sales for the month (in anticipation of the 7th gen on sale later this year) and both the BMW 1 and 3 Series now reaching cruising sales levels. Thanks to this spectacular performance in September, BMW passes Audi to now rank #2 year-to-date at 3,872 units and 9.9% vs. 3,647 and 9.3% for Audi. Mercedes also delivers a very solid month: up to #3 in September with 280 sales and 8.4%. Year-to-date, Renault ranks #4 followed by Peugeot, Mercedes and Citroen.
