Turkey July 2020: Ford (+830.4%), Audi (+772.8%), Fiat (+701%) highlight surreal month (+387.5%)

The Ford Kuga breaks into the Turkish Top 15 in July.

27/08 update: Now with Top 25 models.

It’s another seemingly euphoric month for new light vehicle sales in Turkey, up almost 5-fold or a surreal 387.5% year-on-year to 87.401 units, boosting the year-to-date tally up 60.3% to 341.469. Passenger Vehicles are up 350.9% to 69.427 while Light Commercials soar 610.7% to 17.974. However Turkish car registrations were engulfed in a devastating crisis in 2018-2019 which somewhat biases year-on-year comparisons. This way, July 2020 is up 65.7% on July 2018 (52.734) but up just 6.2% on July 2017 (82.297). A year-to-date comparison shows the 7 months 2020 volume is actually down -15.9% on the same period in 2018 (406.082) and off -29.3% on the first 7 months of 2017 (483.455).

Brand-wise, Fiat (+701%) remains at historically high levels at 19.4% share, distancing Renault (+300.4%), Ford (+830.4%) and Volkswagen (+422.1%) like in June and YTD. Opel (+541.7%) steps up two spots on last month to #5, toppling Dacia (+601.8%) while Audi (+772.8%) gains 6 ranks to #7 and 4.7% share vs. #14 and 2.8% so far this year. No additional Top 10 carmaker outpaces the market, while further down Mitsubishi (+3131%), Karsan (+2700%), DS (+1500%), Seat (+827.2%), Suzuki (+787.1%), Jeep (+769.5%), Skoda (+678.1%), Volvo (+635.7%) and Lexus (+633.3%) make themselves noticed.

In the models ranking, the Fiat Egea (+693.7%) almost doubles the market growth rate to reach a mammoth 13.9% market share, the 5th time in the past 12 months it crosses the symbolic 10% share mark and coming close to the 14.2% it hit last December. Below, the Renault Clio (+354.1%) and Megane (+248.5%) are both unable to match the market surge, with the Ford Transit/Tourneo Courier (+690.5%) sliding in between the two. The Dacia Duster (+1159.8%) is up 13-fold on July 2019 to land in 5th place, its highest ranking since last December when it hit #4. The Ford Transit/Tourneo (+1003.6%), Audi A3 (#8), Fiat Doblo (+696.9%), Opel Astra (+524.6%), Hyundai Tucson (+519.6%) and Fiat Fiorino (+651.3%) also shine, as does the Ford Kuga (#15) lifted to 1.6% share vs 0.5% year-to-date by the new generation.
