Puerto Rico is an unincorporated state of the United States, and as such new car registrations data is not accounted for in the U.S. updates. Thankfully we have been able to follow this market for the past 25 years. In 2016, Puerto Rican sales end two years of decline (-12% in 2014 and -7% in 2015) with a 5% rise to 88.183 units. Toyota follows the market at +6% to 26.4% share, exactly double the #2 carmaker, Hyundai surging 25% to 13.2%. Kia (+2%), Nissan (+11%), Chrysler (+9%) and Ford (-6%) complete a Top 6 unchanged on 2015. Honda (+10%), Maserati(+58%), Volvo (+127%) and Jaguar (+174%) post the biggest year-on-year gains in the rest of the ranking wheres Scion (-12%), Fiat (-19%), General Motors (-22%), Mazda (-23%), Volkswagen (-27%) and Smart (-37%) suffer.

The Toyota Tacoma is up 54% to #4, making the Top Four 100% Toyota.

In the models ranking, the Toyota Yaris is lifted up 44% by its new generation sedan – a rebadged Mazda2 – and takes a pole position it hadn’t held it Puerto Rico since 2012. The Yaris ends three consecutive years of reign of the Toyota Corolla, down 36% to #2. Below, an army of light trucks are catching up fast: the Toyota RAV4 is up 33%, the Toyota Tacoma is up 54% and the Hyundai Tucson up 52%, but the Hyundai Elantra tops them all with a stunning 84% gain. Although part of the United States, American models have never done well in Puerto Rico. The Jeep Wrangler, up 28% to #9, is the only one in the Top 18, with the Jeep Grand Cherokee (#19), Patriot (#20) and Ram Pickup (#21) in tow. Notice also the Jeep Renegade up 77% to #23, the Honda HR-V up 156% to #26, the Toyota Corolla iM – the new name for the Scion iM – landing at #48 and the Mercedes GLC shooting up to #53.
