It’s another record year for new car sales in Morocco, up a very generous 25% year-on-year in 2016 to 163.110 registrations, smashing the previous record of 130.316 established just last year. The Moroccan market still has lots of potential when we take into account the number of cars per thousand inhabitants at 65 vs. its neighbouring countries: 140 in Algeria and 122 in Tunisia, or 200 in South Africa. Low-cost operator and local producer Dacia maintains its stranglehold on the Moroccan market with a mammoth 25.9% share and sales up 16%, boosted by a new financing offer at 0% interest for up to 60 months called “Miftah Dacia” (explanatory video in French here).

The Dacia Dokker is up 18% to cross the 10.000 annual-unit barrier in 2016.

Parent brand Renault is lifted up a gigantic 46% to 10.5% share by a raft of new models, while Ford (+41%) takes full advantage of its new “Ford Salaf” financing option – used by 45% of all new buyers – now complemented by a “Ford Tajdid” long-term leasing option. Below Peugeot up just 22% in 4th place, Volkswagen manages its very first five-digit annual result, delivering the largest year-on-year gain in the Top 20 at +72%. Citroen and Toyota rounds up the Top 10 and slightly outpace the market, while beyond let’s single out Volvo (+37%), Land Rover (+38%), Skoda (+42%), Kia (+45%), Mini (+60%) and Jaguar (+415%) all posting spectacular gains.

The Ford Fiesta surges 51% to land on the Moroccan podium in 2016.

Model-wise, the Dacia Logan lodges a 4th consecutive year in the pole position but sees its market share thaw by one full percentage point to 8.1% as its sales fail to match the market growth at +12%. Just below, the Dacia Dokker is slowly but surely catching up at +18% to 6.2%. Two supermini elbow their way towards the top of the Moroccan sales charts this year: the Ford Fiesta is up 51% to #3 and the Renault Clio up 63% to #4, knocking the Dacia Sandero (+8%) and Duster (+9%) down to #5 and #6. In fact, with the Lodgy lifted up 56% to #7 by the “Grand Taxi” – a government program aimed at renewing the country’s taxi fleet – Dacia places all its five models inside the Moroccan Top 7…

The Dacia Lodgy, part of the Grand Taxi operation, makes it five Dacias in the Top 7.

The Renault Megane (+49%), Citroen C-Elysee (+62%), Skoda Octavia (+76%), Peugeot 208 (+95%) and Toyota Yaris (+137%) all take off while the Hyundai Tucson directly lands inside the Top 20, the Renault Kadjar is at #26 and the Hyundai Creta at #32.
