The Ecuadorian new car market suffers a second harsh decline in a row in 2016: after -32% in 2015 it’s now -22% this year to just 63.555 units, the weakest annual result since 2004. Chevrolet remains master in command, selling more cars than the next 8 carmakers combined at 28.375 but sees its share thaw from 49.5% last year to 44.6% now due to a larger-than-market 30% drop. Kia gains 11% to jump four percentage points to 13.4% share, distancing Hyundai (-13%) and Toyota (-19%) while Chinese carmaker Great Wall is up three spots and 11% to #5 after gaining 13% and two ranks in 2015, in effect slicing its ranking in two in the space of two years. It is unclear whether the brand’s 2.717 sales figure include models sold under the Haval brand, such as the H2, H6 Coupe, H6 Sport and H8. The other two manufacturers to post a year-on-year gain in the Top 20 are Renault surging 55% and Honda up an even more impressive 69%. Apart from Great Wall, there are four other Chinese brands in the Top 20: Chery (#12), Dongfeng (#13), JAC (#14), Zotye landing directly at #15 with 230 sales and BYD (#19).
