2016 is a replica of 2015 with 12 solid months of all-time records culminating in an out-of-this world December score of 192.578 registrations, the highest month in history and 20% above the previous record of December 2015. The annual all-time high of 1.351.764 established last year is eclipsed after just 11 months and the record is lifted up 18.6% to a stunning 1.603.777 for the Full Year 2016. Market leader Nissan gains slightly less ground than the market at +16% but becomes the first brand to sell over 400.000 units in a single year at 402.055 for a 25.1% share (25.7% in 2015). Chevrolet is up 21%, Volkswagen up 15%, Toyota up 16%, Ford up 22% and Honda up 20% in a Top 6 unchanged on 2015.

The big brand launch of 2015, Kia has turned out to be even more of a success than its sister brand Hyundai that landed in Mexico in 2014. It peaked at 4.5% share in September and ranked 7th for the most part of the year, a position it holds at year-end with 58.112 sales and 3.6% share, knocking Mazda (-4%), Dodge (+33%), Hyundai (+28%) and Renault (+23%) all down one spot. Further down, Audi gains 23% to #15, with Lincoln (+20%), Volvo (+21%), Porsche (+24%), Smart (+24%), Jaguar (+47%) and Alfa Romeo (+80%) also beating the market.

We have a new winner in the models ranking: the Nissan Versa has progressively been advertised to taxi companies as the replacement for the discontinued Tsusu, and it worked: sales are up 40% to 90.543, resisting a last minute rally from the Chevrolet Aveo, #1 in September, November and December, and up 4% for the year to 80.052. The Versa is the first Nissan to top the annual Mexican sales charts since the Tsuru in 2010. Now that the antediluvian Matiz has ended its career, the Chevrolet Spark surges 73% to land on the podium with a record 74.078 sales. In a record-breaking December, these three models sold over 10.000 units each – the first time this happened in Mexico – with the Aveo (13.161), Versa (11.2476) and Spark (10.707) leading the charts.

The Spark knocks all the following five nameplates down one spot: the Nissan Pickup (+17%), VW Vento (+19%), Jetta (+19%), Nissan March (+13%) and Tsuru (+0.4%). The Chevrolet Sonic (+58%) and Sentra (+28%) exchange position to round up the Top 10. Below, the Chevrolet Trax gains three ranks to get closer to an annual Top 10 ranking at #12, the Ford Figo is up 62 spots to end its first full year in market at #14 while the Toyota Yaris (+49%), Dodge Attitude (+48%), Kia Sportage (+220%), Honda HR-V (+48%), City (+32%), Chevrolet Equinox (+305%), Toyota Hilux (+31%), VW Polo (+45%), Kia Forte (+443%), Chevrolet S10 (+438%), Hyundai Tucson (+279%) and Mazda CX-3 (+446%) all beat the market inside the Top 50.

The Fiat Mobi also makes its appearance at #175 after just one month of sales – it ranked #84 in December and could climb much higher in 2017.
