Canada Full Year 2016: Ford F-Series at peak in 4th straight record year

Euphoric Canadian new light vehicle sales post a fourth consecutive record year at +2.8% to 1.953.008 deliveries. Last year FCA Fiat Chrysler Automobile led the groups ranking for the first time but a 5.3% drop in 2016 has it return to 2nd place below Ford Motor, up 9.3% to 304.445 sales. The rest of the Top 15 is unchanged, with General Motors up 1.5% to 13.7% share, Toyota Motor up 4.2% to 11.2% and Hyundai-Kia up 3.1$ to 10.7%. Honda Motor (+5.2%), Subaru (+7.7%), Daimler AG (+8.5%), BMW-Mini (+6.1%), Jaguar-Land Rover (+35%) and Volvo Cars (+27.5%) all outpace the market.

Brand-wise, Ford remains ultra-dominant at 15.2% share thanks to a 9.5% year-on-year surge, ahead of Toyota (+4.7%), Honda (+6.4%), Chevrolet (+1.8%) and Hyundai (+1.8%). GMC (-1.3%) takes advantage of a weak Dodge result (-4.6%) to snap the 8th place overall. BMW (+8.6%), Porsche (+10.1%), Audi (+14.2%), Buick (+14.8%), Land Rover (+18.4%), Bentley (+21.5%), Volvo (+27.5%), Jaguar (+134.1%) and Smart (+161.9%) post the largest gains, while on the other end of the scale Volkswagen (-14.7%), Alfa Romeo (-30.3%), Chrysler (-34.2%) and Fiat (-57.7%) are the only carmakers displaying double-digit declines.

The Ford F-Series has a stellar year in Canada in 2016: with deliveries up 22% year-on-year, it smashes its own annual volume record for a single nameplate (over 145.000 units) as early as in November and remains the best-selling vehicle in the country for the 8th straight year and the 13th time in the past 14 years. The F-Series represents a whopping 48% of Ford Canada sales this year, and it broke its monthly volume record no less than 4 times in 2016: in March (13.385)April (13.957)August (14.197) and September (15.659). The Ram Pickup stays in 2nd place but drops 2%, distancing the Honda Civic, the best-selling passenger car in Canada for the 19th consecutive year despite sales down 1% to a little over 64.500 vs. almost 49.000 for the Hyundai Elantra, its most immediate pursuant.

Helped by generous discounts, the Dodge Grand Caravan is up 9% and 4 spots to #4 while the Toyota RAV4 surges 16% to #6 and becomes the #1 SUV in the country, dethroning the Ford Escape (-2%). In fact, SUVs monopolise the list of largest year-on-year gains in Canada this year: inside the Top 20, the Honda CR-V (+15%), Nissan Rogue (+12%), Mazda CX-5 (+13%) and Hyundai Tucson (+45%) dominate, while among the Top 50 best-sellers the Jeep Grand Cherokee (+28%), Nissan Murano (+37%), Toyota Highlander (+25%), Honda HR-V (+38%) and Kia Sportage (+75%) are tops, with the Chevrolet Malibu (+25%) saving the passenger cars; honour. In a shy year for all-new nameplates, the Cadillac XT5 (#138) and Chrysler Pacifica (#146) are the only ones ranking inside the Top 150.
