The Argentinean new vehicle market is up by a robust 10% year-on-year in 2016 to 709.482 units, still a far way off the all-time record of 955.023 hit back in 2013. Volkswagen remains the most popular manufacturer in the country and the only one with six-digit sales figures in 2016 at 108.463 despite losing 8% on 2015. But Chevrolet (+16%)  and most impressively Renault (+28%) are both catching up fast, ending 2016 only a few hundred sales short off 100.000. Ford (+2%) dives from #2 to #4, Toyota (+16%) overtakes Fiat (+5%) with Peugeot (+22%), Citroen (+15%), Mercedes (-3%) and Honda surging 80% to round up the Top 10. Further down, Jeep is up 10-fold and 10 spots to #14 thanks to the Renegade, BMW is up 5-fold to #16, Volvo up 100%, Smart up 144%, Mini up 259%, Subaru up 174% and Suzuki up 228%. Chinese carmaker Lifan launches in Argentina this year, landing at #23 with 405 sales, still a fair distance off Chinese leader Chery (3.779), and DS appears at #28.

Renault Duster Oroch Argentina 2016The Renault Duster Oroch lands at #26.

For the first time in the history of Argentinean sales, a commercial vehicle takes the lead of the annual charts: the Toyota Hilux soars 16% and two spots on last year to land the pole position by a very comfortable 4.500 sales margin, putting an end to two consecutive years of reign by the VW Gol, down 12% to #3. The Fiat Palio is up 11% and 3 spots to #3, the Renault Clio Mio is up 18% to #4 and even led the overall ranking in December even though it is now discontinued. The Toyota Etios gains 15% to #5 and was the #1 passenger car for the first time in November, while the Chevrolet Classic, #1 in Argentina from 2009 to 2013, is down 23% to #6. Further down, the Chevrolet Onix is up 62% to #13, the Renault Nuevo Sandero up 73% to #15 and Chevrolet Prisma up 55% to #19. The Ford Ka leads all-new nameplates at #21 ahead of the Renault Duster Oroch at #26, the Peugeot 2008 at #35 and the Fiat Toro at #43.
