South Africa October 2016: Ford Ranger back to #1 in market down 10%

The South African new vehicle market continues on its downward trend with October sales down a harsh 10% year-on-year to 48.745 units, pulling the year-to-date cume down 11% to 459.486 units. Toyota remains master in command in South Africa with stable sales and 22.8% share, followed by the Volkswagen Group at 16.5% (-9%), Ford Motor at 14.8% (+8%) and Hyundai-Kia at 9.9% (-13%). General Motors/Isuzy freefalls 37%, Renault is down 31% and Jaguar Land Rover down 42%. On the bright side, Mazda gains 11%, Mahindra is up 10% and Porsche up 54%. Model-wise, after seven consecutive months of Toyota Hilux reign, the Ford Ranger reclaims the top spot thanks to sales up 8% to 2.964 vs. 2.781 (+5%) for the Hilux and 2.734 (-14%) for the VW Polo Vivo. The Hilux remains by far the best-seller year-to-date though, with 29.862 deliveries (+3%) compared to 26.123 (-8%) for the Ranger.

The VW Polo (+6%) and Toyota Corolla (-29%) complete the October Top 5, ahead of the Ford Fiesta surging 85% to 6th place. Other great performers include the Toyota Fortuner (+57%), Nissan NP300 Hardbody (+54%), Kia Picanto (+109%), Nissan X-Trail (+304%) and VW Tiguan (+254%). The Hyundai Tucson leads recent launches (<12 months) at #19, ahead of the Honda BR-V shooting up 135 spots on last month to #38, the Mazda CX-3 (#43), Mercedes GLC (#53), the Datsun GO+ up 12 ranks on its inaugural September score to #55, the Mahindra KUV100 (#74), the Renault Kadjar up 38 spots to a best-ever 79th place, the Smart Forfour (#85) and Ford Mustang (#88).
