After dropping a harsh 38% in July, new car sales in New Caledonia, an overseas French territory located north east of Australia, are on the mend in August at +6% to 783 registrations, however over the first eight months of 2016 sales remain frankly in negative territory at -15% to 5.136 units. Replicating its mainland French success, Dacia is the most popular marque on the archipelago this month with deliveries up a stunning 56% to hold a commanding 13.2% market share, distancing traditional leader Ford at 11.7% (+26%), Toyota at 11.4% (+33%), Citroen at 7.5% (+11%) and Peugeot at 7.4% (+7%). Subaru (+20%), Hyundai (+29%), Renault (+42%) and Mercedes (+67%) all post very robust year-on-year gains.

Model-wise, the Dacia Duster and Toyota Hilux tie for pole position with 7% each, illustrating the very specific trends at play in this faraway bout of France: SUVs and pickups trucks are the favourite choices of consumers whose tastes are far removed from the ones of mainland France. The Ford Ranger, Ford Fiesta, Dacia Sandero and Isuzu D-Max follow, while the Peugeot 208 – #1 in mainland France – ranks only 7th here.
