Last November (+5%) and December (+12%) were the first year-on-year gains in 29 months, so hopes for a Thai market bottoming out were allowed. These are crushed with January figures, down 13% to just 51.821 registrations. Toyota sinks 31% to 13.843 sales and 26.7% share whereas Isuzu resists at -1% with 11.044 units and 21.3% share. Honda takes a beating at -44% but remains third above a string of brands spectacularly gaining ground on January 2015: Mitsubishi up 19%, Nissan up 5%, Mazda up 27%, Ford up 30% and Suzuki up 46%. Chinese carmaker MG is up to #11.

Honda City Thailand January 2016The Honda City is up to #3.

The Isuzu D-Max surprisingly holds onto the pole position for the 2nd month in a row thanks to sales up 1% to 9.417 vs. -27% and 7.640 for the Toyota Hilux. This is surprising because the D-Max only got a superficial facelift last year vs. a total overhaul for the Hilux, certainly not a good sign for the latter. Toyota is also handicapped by the Vios having a month off (95 units) while the 2016 model is being prepared at the local factory. The Honda City climbs three spots on last month to #3 despite sales down 27% as does the Toyota Yaris to #4 despite sales down 24%.

After a few euphoric months enjoying their novelty effect, the Toyota Fortuner (#5) and Mitsubishi Pajero Sport (#8) lose some steam at 3.9% and 3.5% share respectively vs. their recent  bests standing at 6.7% (December) and 7% (November). The Ford Ranger is up a flamboyant 44% to #6, the Mazda2 up 83% to #7, the Chevrolet Colorado up 36% to #12 but the Honda HR-V is down 49% to #13. Further down, the Mazda CX-3 breaks into the Top 20 for its third month in market, the MG 3 is up one spot to a best-sere #27 and we welcome the Honda BR-V landing directly at #31.
