Mexico November 2015: Chevy Aveo leads, Ford Figo up

Incredible but true: the Mexican new car market is headed for a never-seen before 12 straight months of monthly records: this month is the best November score ever recorded in the country at 126.223 sales, up 13% year-on-year and the 11th consecutive time this happens in 2015… The year-to-date total is now up 19% after 11 months to 1.191.089 units. For once Nissan underperforms with sales up just 5% on a year ago to 24.8% share vs. 25.9% so far in 2015. Just below are Chevrolet (+15%) and Volkswagen (+13%) – unaffected by dieselgate here, while Toyota (+26%) and Honda (+19%) both outpace Ford, struggling with volumes down 1% year-on-year. Dodge shoots up 125% at #8 while newcomer Kia (2.247 sales) is fast approaching sister-brand Hyundai (2.549). Audi (+21%), GMC (+24%), BMW (+29%), Mitsubishi (+35%), Cadillac (+66%) and Isuzu (+126%) all post strong scores.

The Chevrolet Aveo remains the best-seller in the country, even outpacing the market with sales up a fantastic 38% year-on-year to 8.335 and 6.6% share, distancing the Nissan Versa (+20%) and VW Jetta (+81%). After exposing the dilemma of Nissan Pickup figures last month, we at BSCB have chosen: they will be reported as Nissan publishes them, split between “Pickup” – the commercial variant of the truck – and “Frontier” – the private use variant. They are in fact the same model (named NP300 here), however their use is vastly different and will be reported as such. There will be a note each month indicating whether the NP300 would rank if both variants were added up. In this context, the Nissan Pickup ranks 4th this month (the Frontier is #26) and #3 year-to-date (Frontier: #28).

Further down the ranking, the Toyota Yaris excels at +228% year-on-year to #14, as does the Dodge Attitude up to a best-ever #17 for this generation of the nameplate thanks to 1.783 sales. The Honda HR-V reenters the Top 20 at #19, but the most spectacular improvement is delivered by the Ford Figo: launched just last month, it gains 39 spots on its October ranking to knock on the Top 20’s door at #22. The Kia Sportage breaks into the Top 30 and accounts for more than 50% of the carmaker’s sales in Mexico this month, just as the Kia Sorento breaks into the Top 50… The Chevrolet S10 gains 30 ranks on its initial month to #61 and we welcome two new nameplates in Mexico in November: the Mazda CX-3 at #181 and the Fiat 500X at #207.
