The South African new car market continues to struggle in a depressed economic context, with sales down 9% year-on-year in October to 54.244 units, pulling the year-to-date total down 4.5% to 517.322 registrations. The October figure includes 36.175 units (-11%) sold to private consumers, especially sensitive to economic prospects, and this despite ever more aggressive promotions by all actors in the industry. If last month record export numbers were balancing the picture, this time they are also down at -14% to 27.732 units, hurt notably by the Ford Ranger generation changeover. According to local publication carmag.co.za however, vehicle exports for 2015 remain on track to hit a new annual record of 335.000 (2014: 276.873). Toyota is once again the most popular manufacturer in the country despite sales down 7% to 20.6% market share, followed by the Volkswagen Group at 16.4% (-2%), Ford at 12.3%, Hyundai-Kia at 10.3% and General Motors-Isuzu at 9.8%.

Toyota Auris South Africa October 2015The Toyota Corolla/Auris is boosted by its facelift up to #2 overall in South Africa.

For the fourth month running we are proud to be able to offer you BSCB readers a complete models ranking for South Africa including Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes and Great Wall nameplates which are otherwise not made public. The VW Polo Vivo manages the rare feat of holding onto the pole position for a third consecutive month (3.170 sales) however it is stuck in third place year-to-date at 26.911 units below the Toyota Hilux (29.017) and Ford Ranger (28.398) still fighting tooth-and-nail, with the Ranger winning the race this month. Boosted by its facelift, the Toyota Corolla/Auris/Quest (in effect three different models) is up to 2nd place overall with 5.1% share this month.
