Sales of new local models are up 5% year-on-year in January to 111,620 deliveries, and it’s a good month for Light Commercial Vehicles, with the Hyundai Porter up 4 spots on December to pole position and 17% year-on-year to the 8,860 sales, almost 2,000 units above any other nameplate in the market. The Hyundai Sonata is up 35% on January 2014 to 2nd place with 6,907 units, the Hyundai Santa Fe is up 6 ranks on last month to #3 but down 7% year-on-year and the Grandeur completes a Top Four 100% Hyundai but is down 3 spots to #4. Excellent showings of the Kia Sorento at #5, Kia Carnival at #8 and Hyundai Genesis at #12.

We welcome an all-new entrant in the ranking this month: the Ssangyong Tivoli, with a rather unimpressive design and strangely marketed locally as “My First SUV” – likely to alienate anyone aged above 19. Now under the direction of Indian manufacturer Mahindra, Ssangyong hasn’t launched a new nameplate in 10 years – since the Actyon and Kyron hit showrooms in 2005, so this is a momentous event in the carmaker’s attempt at gaining relevance in a crowded SUV market. The Tivoli lands at #17 with 2,312 sales, instantly becoming the brand’s best-seller at home ahead of the Korando Sports (2,263) and Korando C (1,334). Finally, let’s notice the Hyundai Aslan up 4 spots on December to reach a best-ever #27 ranking.
