As an appetiser for overall German new car registrations, I give you German Private Sales data for January 2015. Germany characterises itself by an exceptionally low Private Sales (PS) ratio in general, but in January it reaches record lows at just 31.2% and 65.937 registrations in market at 211.337 units. This level is to be compared to 36.2% over the FY2014 and 37.9% in FY2013, let alone other European countries like France where the 2014 PS ratio is around 52%. Before we go into the sales charts in detail, a methodology note: are counted as Private Sales the cars sold to private buyers. Demo cars, rental cars and long-term leases are not counted as private – this is pretty standard across the industry.

Volkswagen monopolises the January podium like it did over the FY2014 with the same models: the Golf in the lead at 27% PS followed by the Polo at 49.2% and the Tiguan at 42%, all these PS ratios being well below their respective 2014 levels. The Mercedes B-Class is back up to #4 ahead of the Skoda Octavia strong at #5, the VW Up excellent at #6 and the Seat Leon at a best-ever #7. Other great performers with German private buyers in January include the Dacia Sandero at #9 (88.4%), Smart Fortwo at #11 (60.1%), Nissan Qashqai at #15, Mitsubishi Space Star at #21, Hyundai ix35 at #23 and the BMW 2 Series at #24. The Renault Captur (#30) is above the Clio (#32) and the Peugeot 2008 (#52) is well above the 208 (#85).
