Germany October 2014: VW Polo and Mercedes C-Class shine

The German new car market is up 3% year-on-year in October to 275,320 registrations, bringing the year-to-date total to 2,556,991 units, also up 3% on 2013. Boosted by the new Sportsvan variant (separate data unavailable), the VW Golf remains at extremely high levels this month, just under 10% share thanks to 27,306 sales compared to 8.3% YTD. Now that the refreshed model is well established in dealerships, the VW Polo is up 24% year-on-year to reach the #2 spot for the first time in 8 months and overtakes the Audi A3 to rank #3 YTD. The VW Passat, in changeover period, is down 4% to #3 but remains #2 YTD. The Mercedes C-Class is up 20% to claim a Top 5 spot for the first time since last April and the third month this year so far, while the Opel Corsa is still in runout mode at +32% in 6th place.

Just outside the Top 10, the Skoda Octavia is down 19% to #11 and now threatened by the Seat Leon for the title of best-selling foreigner (although both brands are owned by Volkswagen): the Leon breaks its German ranking record once again at an exceptional 12th position with 4,266 sales and 1.5%, up 36% YOY and its second best volume/share below the 4,328 and 1.6% reached last May. The Renault Twingo confirms its new generation has struck a chord with German consumers at #27 and 2,568 sales (+91%), the Hyundai i30 is one of only 6 foreigners in the Top 30, the Opel Mokka is up 62% to #32, the Renault Clio up 28% to #33, Skoda Rapid up 137% to a best-ever #37 and the Peugeot 308 doubling its sales year-on-year to #57.

Among recent newcomers, the Mercedes V-Class is up 37% on September to #61, the Porsche Macan up 44% to #96 and still the brand’s best-seller by far above the Cayenne (#115) and 911 (#116), the Nissan Pulsar up 77% to #130, Jeep Renegade up 404% to #134 and already the brand’s best-seller in Germany, the Peugeot 108 up 40% to #138, the Ford Transit Courier up 30% to #142 and the Lexus NX up 33% to #212, here too the brand’s best-seller in the country.
