As is the tradition on BSCB, after studying the Top 10 models and brands in Europe we now go into the full ranking in detail. As a reminder the big news in the Top 10 were the impressive gains of the top two best-sellers: the VW Golf at +19% and VW Polo at +32% and the 10th spot of the Fiat 500, among Europe’s Top 10 most popular vehicles for only the third time since the 2nd generation launched back in 2007, all achieved this year. This month, like March, is heavily skewed by the seasonal strength of the UK market (bi-annual license plate change), so a lot of models performing well in Europe actually owe most of this result to a strong position in that market. Outside the familiar Top 10, the most striking performance is the Mercedes C-Class boosted by a new generation that the automotive is starting to label ‘better than the S-Class” and by strong sales in the UK and Germany, up 15 spots on August to #13 with 16,315 sales, up 23% on September 2013.

The Peugeot 308 is up 49% year-on-year but down 3 spots on August to #17: to keep things in perspective it is only still #6 in its segment below the BMW 1 Series up 11 ranks to #16 vs. #22 YTD, a typical case of UK-boosted European ranking. The Opel/Vauxhall Mokka breaks into the European Top 20 for the very first time, reaching a record 20th place thanks to sales up 116% year-on-year to 13,593. The Mini continues to climb the European ladder thanks to its new generation: up a further 12 spots to #24, by far the nameplate’s best ranking since BSCB started following detailed European sales charts one year ago. The Renault Captur (+5 on August to #18) and Peugeot 2008 (+9 to #25) return to rankings more in line with their YTD respective levels.

Excellent European start for the new generation Renault Twingo, lifting the nameplate inside the Top 30 at #29, up 12 ranks on August and halving its YTD ranking with 11,227 sales, up 67% year-on-year. The Nissan Juke is back on track, up 27 spots on last month to #33, the Hyundai i10 shows once again that the new model has really struck a chord with European consumers, up 16 ranks to #35 and the VW Golf Sportsvan, though down 7 on last month to #36, astoundingly remains in the lead of its segment ahead of the Citroen C4 Picasso (#40) and Renault Scénic (#42). Other great performers further down include the Volvo V40 up to #46 vs. #61 YTD, the Toyota Aygo up to #48 vs.#63, Nissan Note up to #52 vs. #62 and the Peugeot 108 up 14 spots to #63.
