As is the tradition on BSCB, Iranian monthly data reflects production, not sales but it actually gives a relatively close picture of the most popular cars in the country given the high import duties. In the Persian calendar, August 2014 is roughly equivalent to the 5th month of the Persian year 1393, Mordad. The Iranian automobile industry continues its recovery with production up 84% year-on-year in Mordad to 64,297 units, bringing the 1393 year-to-date total to 391,969 units after 5 months, more than double the score of one year ago. The Top 3 models all progress but slower than the market: the Saipa Pride is up 55%, the Peugeot Pars up 59% and the Peugeot 405 up 50%. In 4th position the Peugeot 206 is reborn again at +190% to 6,817 units while the Saipa Tiba is up one spot on last month to #5 with 6,211 units produced, up 171% year-on-year. This means the Tiba is above the Iran Khodro to become the 2nd most produced native Iranian model for the first time in a ‘normal’ context, the only other one being in April 2013 when overall production was down to just 22,000 units. A change of guard in progress?
