The first cab off the rank for full August 2014 sales in Sweden, and we start with a bang: for only the third time in the past decade, it’s not a Volvo atop the models charts! The VW Golf brilliantly snaps up the pole position thanks to 1,713 sales and 7.1% market share. The previous two occurrences when a foreign model was #1 was in August 2010 (VW Golf) and August 2013 (VW Passat). Before that, we have to go back to the 1950s when the VW Beetle and Opel Olympia/Rekord were best-sellers in Sweden. To grasp the extent of this performance, let’s also notice that the 7.1% market share reached by the VW Golf in Sweden this month is exactly the same as the one it hit at home in Germany in July! With Volkswagen the #1 brand in the country like in August 2012 at 16.3% share, August is definitely shaping up to be a nemesis month for Volvo – but this can be explained by the fact that the local manufacturer all but shuts down for Summer holidays at this time of year, so all should return to ‘normal’ come September.

VW Beetle Sweden 1950Not since the 1950s and the VW Beetle had a foreign model managed to rank #1 more than once in Sweden…

But let’s get back to basics and look at the overall figures for the month now that we have covered the exceptional performance of Volkswagen in Sweden. August 2014 is the third highest August score in the history of automobile in Sweden (since new car sales figures started being tracked in 1946), up 12% year-on-year to 24,274 sales, bringing the year-to-date total to 196,494 units, up a fantastic 16% on 2013. Other brands to shine this month include Audi up to #3 overall with 7.2% share, Skoda up 29% to #7, Mercedes up 42% to #8, Nissan up 39% to #10, Peugeot up 59% to #11, Mitsubishi up 114% to #17, Mazda up 41% to #18, Dacia up 42% to #19, Porsche up 52% to #26 and Jeep up 124% to #27.

In the models ranking, the Audi A6 continues to progress: up two spots on July to #8 and 2.4% vs. #17 and 1.4% year-to-date, the Peugeot 208 is up 19 ranks to #16, the Mercedes C-Class up 28 to #25, the Mazda3 up 16 to #39 and the Skoda Rapid up from outside the Top 60 to #40 this month. The Nissan Leaf breaks into the Swedish Top 50 for the very first time, jumping up an unbelievable #36 with 188 sales which is more than half its year-to-date total! Finally let’s salute the landing of the Citroen C4 Cactus directly at #58 with 116 sales for its very first month in market. Promising.
