New car sales in the Netherlands are down 6% year-on-year in May to 32,950 registrations, bringing the year-to-date total to 199,221 units, down 6% also on 2013. Before reading this analysis you have to keep in mind that the Dutch new car market is potentially the market in the world that is the most influenced by preferential pricing attributed to specific eco-friendly variants of some models. This pricing also influences the amount of tax the buyer is paying and can mean a model goes from no sale one month to #1 the next. In this context, this month Peugeot spectacularly takes the lead of the brands ranking with 9.5% share above Opel at 9.1% and Volkswagen and Renault both at 8.3%.

Model-wise, the Peugeot 308 shoots up 12 spots on May to pole position with 1,759 sales and 5.3%, dislodging the Renault Clio from its May pedestal into #2 spot at 1,330 units and 4%. Still leader year-to-date, the VW Golf ranks third for the 2nd month running with 1,047 sales and 3.2%, ahead of the Skoda Octavia at 3.1% and the Opel Corsa up 12 ranks to #5. Notice also the Opel Astra up 9 spots to #16, the Volvo V40 up 17 to #20 and the Tesla Model S up 17 to #52.
