The Gulf Cooperation Council area includes Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. New car sales in the region are up a very impressive 17% year-on-year in June to 147,198 registrations, bringing the year-to-date total to 872,466 units, up 12% on 2013. To give these figures a bit of perspective, let’s point out they slide in-between Italy (128,270/761,842) and France (196,257/958,776) – that’s how significant the new car market in this region is. Model-wise, the Toyota Hilux logically reigns supreme at 12,251 sales and 8.3% share and the Toyota Corolla, #2 in June at 7,838 units and a strong 5.3% share, is now also #2 year-to-date (4.6%), overtaking the Toyota Prado (4.5%), down to #4 in June. The Toyota Land Cruiser for its part steps onto this month’s podium at #3 and 6,059 sales.

The Hyundai Elantra is stable in 5th place and remains the best-selling non-Toyota model in the region thanks to a particularly strong score in Saudi Arabia (#2), while the Toyota Yaris benefits from the new model to pass the Toyota Camry and Hyundai Accent and rank 6th in June. The Toyota Land Cruiser and Nissan D22 pick-ups round up the Top 10 as they do year-to-date. Further down, let’s salute the good performances of the Isuzu D-Max up to #12 vs. #16 year-to-date, the Hyundai Santa Fe up to #14 vs. #19, Kia Cerato up to #17 vs. #20, Kia Rio up to #22 vs. #26, Nissan Altima up to #26 vs. #30 and Renault Duster up to #30 vs. #47.

The Toyota Avanza breaks into the Top 100 at #93 (#214 year-to-date) as it launched this month in most parts of the region as does the Dodge Dart at #108. Other particularities of this wealthy region is the good rankings (sometimes world-best) of expensive models. As such let’s notice the BMW 7 Series at #66, the Porsche Cayenne at #76, Mercedes S-Class at #85, Lexus LS at #117 and Audi A8 at #135.
