Indonesia May 2014: Honda Mobilio hits 10%, Datsun Go+ lands

Shock, horror: for the first time in at least 4 years, the Indonesian new car market is down year-on-year in May at -2% to 97,147 registrations, however the year-to-date total is still up a beautiful 7% on 2013 to a record 532,427 units. The fight for the models ranking pole position is getting more and more interesting: in May the Toyota Avanza is down 13% on last month and a harsh 28% year-on-year to just 12,251 units and 12.6% share vs. 17.1% a year ago… while its archenemy the Honda Mobilio is up 29% and a full 3 percentage points of market share on April to 9,684 sales and a round 10% share, its new record… Never since 2006 had the Toyota Avanza been so threatened for first place! Can the Mobilio snap the pole position away from the Avanza? The next few months in Indonesia will be fascinating to follow indeed.
Datsun GO+ Panca
Toyota takes a beating in the brands ranking: down 20% on April to 31,649 sales and 32.6% share while Honda goes from #5 to #2, up 26% to 16,356 units and 16.8%, passing Daihatsu, Suzuki and Mitsubishi. The Toyota Kijang Innova is back up one spot on last month to #3 with 5.1% share, above the Suzuki Ertiga (+3) and Toyota Agya (-2) however the latter remains third year-to-date with 5.9% of the market. The extremely popular mini MPV segment is being turned upside down this year in Indonesia: as a consequence of the Mobilio launch, the Daihatsu Xenia (an Avanza rebadge) continues to sink even deeper in the ladder: down a further one rank to a paltry 10th place.
Datsun Go+ Panca
But another mini-MPV could settle everyone this year: launched this month, the low-cost green car (LCGC) Datsun Go+ Panca (Bahasa for “five” which is the Japanese translation of “Go”) is now produced at Nissan’s new local plant in Purwakarta, West Java. Starting at US$7,000, the Datsun Go+ Panca is the first vehicle in Indonesia to offer a third row of seats for such a low price and could climb the ranking very fast over the next few months, even though the Datsun brand is pretty much unknown to most young Indonesian car buyers. It makes its first appearance in Indonesia directly at #18 this month with 1,191 sales and 1.2% share.
