Stuck in hell for a few very long years, the Spanish new car market is definitely smelling the roses now: up 28% year-on-year to 80,210 registrations, bringing the year-to-date total to 282,502 units, up 16% on 2013. In both cases (April and year-to-date), these are the best scores since 2010 and the 2nd best-performance since 2008. Very encouraging figures indeed. Brand-wise, Seat reclaims the throne thanks to 8,513 sales and 10.6% share, two percentage points above its year-to-date level, leaving Volkswagen in the dust this month at 7,808 units and 9.7%  but not year-to-date (9.2% vs. 8.6%) with Opel in third place in both rankings. Ford is up 48%, Citroen up 56%, Hyundai up 43%, Dacia up 133%, Kia up 48%, Skoda up 62%, Mazda up 105%, Lancia up 125% and Porsche up 93%. I told you – it’s a good month to be in Spain.

In the models ranking, the Seat Ibiza confirms it loves the month of April – traditionally when car rental companies start to purchase big batches in preparation for Summer: it jumps up to 5% of the market thanks to 4,006 sales, its best share at home since… April 2013 (5.2%) and nearly double the market share it commended last January (2.7%). The Ibiza therefore leads the Spanish car sales for the 2nd month running, something that had not happened in at least two years.

The Seat Leon remains at an excellent second spot both this month with 3,155 sales and 3.9% and year-to-date at 9,545 units and 3.4%, and is followed in both rankings by the Opel Corsa, also boosted by rental companies. The Peugeot 208 is back up 5 spots on March to #5, the Ford Focus up 6 to #7, VW Tiguan up 7 to #15, Peugeot 3008 up 17 to #22 and the Fiat 500L is up 15 ranks to #23. Further down, the Kia Carens gains 24 ranks to #43, the Seat Alhambra enjoys a second wind, up 67 to #62, the Mercedes GLA maintains itself inside the Top 100 at #95 and the Porsche Macan is the brand’s best-seller already (it’s becoming a habit!) for its first appearance in the Spanish ranking at #135 with 72 sales.
