Scotland-Northern Ireland-Wales-England (UK) March 2014: Renault Clio, Captur & Vauxhall Mokka shine

Thanks to SMMT, I can share with you the best-sellers for each nation in the UK in March, all in one update. Keep in mind this is a zoom in into each nation, all figures are already included in the UK overall March update. The UK market overall is in stunning shape in March at +18% year-on-year, with England, Northern Ireland and Wales matching that growth rate while Scotland (+15%) lies slightly behind.

In Scotland, the Vauxhall Corsa reclaims the top spot it has been holding over the Full Year continuously for the past 6 years thanks to 2,538 sales and 5.8% share, however this is not enough to pass the Ford Fiesta year-to-date yet at 3,195 units and 5.2% vs. 3,352 and 5.5%. The Ford Focus is strong in third place with 3.6% while the Renault Clio shoots up 5 spots on February to #4 both this month with 1,335 sales and 3.1% and year-to-date vs. #9 in 2013. Notice also the Vauxhall Mokka making its first appearance of the year inside the Scottish Top 10 at #10 just under 2% share.

In Northern Ireland, below the Ford Fiesta consistent at 4.1% share both this month and year-to-date, here too the best performer is the Renault Clio. It jumps from outside the February Top 10 directly to second place thanks to 236 sales and 3.1% share and now ranks 10th year-to-date like in 2013. The Renault Captur for its part is up two further spots on February to rank 5th this month at 215 units and 2.8%, also shooting up to #9 year-to-date. Other notable performances include the 9th place of the Hyundai i10 and the 10th spot held by the Dacia Sandero with 2% market share.

In Wales, the entire Top 5 best-sellers are identical to the UK ranking overall with the Ford Fiesta leading the charge with a huge 9.4% market share followed by the Ford Focus (3.9%), Vauxhall Corsa (2.9%), VW Golf and Vauxhall Astra (both at 2%). The Fiat 500 over-performs in 6th place as does the Renault Clio in 7th. The Suzuki Alto holds onto its 10th spot thanks to 295 sales and 1.6% and ranks 9th so far in 2014 like in 2013.

In England, traditionally the models Top 10 is very similar to the UK one as England accounts for 85% of the overall UK market in March. The Top 6 most popular models are identical to the overall UK ranking with the VW Golf delivering a slightly higher market share at 2.9% in 4th place. The BMW 3 Series is up from #9 overall to #7 in England with 6,986 sales and 1.8%, kicking the VW Polo and Fiat 500 down to #8 and #9 respectively, while the Audi A3 misses out on a Top 10 ranking for just 54 units.
