The Indonesian new car market is in the midst of a fascinating, never seen before evolution and each month brings us its lot of surprises. Firstly it looks like 2014 will mark a 5th consecutive all-time record year, with new car sales up 8% on 2013 both in February at 111,767 registrations and year-to-date at 215,277. Secondly we witness the appearance of a new blockbuster seller this month. The once dominating trio Toyota Avanza-Daihatsu Xenia-Toyota Innova was first disturbed 18 months ago by the Suzuki Ertiga, then late last year by the arrival of the low cost green car couple Toyota Agya-Daihatsu Ayla, with the Agya ranking #2 overall in November and December. Now is the turn of the Honda Mobilio…

The mini MPV version of the Honda Brio squarely is aimed at the Toyota Avanza, and after making its very first appearance inside the Indonesian Top 20 last month at #18, it literally explodes in February, multiplying its sales by 4 and gaining 15 spots to land on the third step of the podium at 6,241 sales and 5.6% share. The Avanza is still a fair way away at 15,708 and 14.1%, but it is very interesting to note that the Avanza’s market share so far in 2014 (14.5%) is a significant 3 percentage points lower than its Full year 2013 level (17.5%)… Plus the similarly sized Datsun Go+ will launch later this year and will undercut both the Avanza and Mobilio in price.

The Mobilio enables Honda to break into the Top 5 most popular brands at #5 with 11,915 sales and 10.7%, below Toyota (34.6%), Daihatsu (17%), Mitsubishi (12.9%) and Suzuki (12.2%). Other notable movements in the Indonesian models ranking this month include the Daihatsu Gran Max Pick-up back up to #4, the Suzuki APV back up to #10 and the Suzuki Karimun Wagon R up a further 3 spots to reach a best-ever #14.
