Excellent start of the year for new car sales in Hungary: up +20% in January vs. a year ago to 4,408 registrations, plus 878 LCVs (+37%). Ranking #3 and #4 over the Full Year 2013, Ford (12.2% share) and Volkswagen (11%) take the lead this month, passing Opel (10.8%) and Skoda (10.3%), the dominant brands last year. Dacia (#7) is still above Renault (#9) and any other French brands for that matter. Model-wise, it’s a strong month for the Skoda Octavia at 7.8% share thanks to 343 sales, almost double the score of the #2: the Ford Focus at 181 units and 4.1%.

The Opel Astra jumps back onto the podium at #3 and 3.5% while the VW Golf is up to #4. Outside the Full Year 2013 Top 20, the VW Polo is up to a brilliant 5th place this month thanks to 133 sales and 3% share, the Ford Mondeo is up to #7 (vs. #16 in 2013) and the Skoda Rapid up to #9 (vs. #20). A very interesting particularity of Hungarian new car sales is that the large majority (73%) is actually non-private sales to businesses, fleet and rental companies. Particularly strong in non-private sales this month are Skoda (91%), Citroen (89%), Ford (86%), Peugeot (86%) and Volkswagen (80%) while Suzuki (45%) and Dacia (46%) are at the other end of the scale…
