Portugal Full Year 2013: Renault Clio #1 for first time in 5 years

After dropping by 31% in 2011 and 38% in 2012, the Portuguese new car market has turned the corner in 2013: up 11% to 105,933 registrations. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves, this is still the 2nd worst annual result in the country in almost 30 years. The Renault Clio takes the lead of Portuguese sales charts for the first time since 2008 and the 5th time overall after 1999, 2002, 2003 and 2008 thanks to sales up a splendid 36% year-on-year to 5,820 units and 5.5% share. The Peugeot 208 is up 31% and two spots on 2012 to #2 with 4,457 sales and 4.2% while the VW Polo remains #3 at 4,261 units and 4% (up 15%) and the Renault Megane, leader in 2012, is down 19% and 3 ranks to #4 with 3,938 sales and 3.7%.

BMW manages to place two models inside the Portuguese Top 8 this year (most probably for the first time ever): the 3 Series is up a massive 55% and 8 spots year-on-year to #7 with 2,622 sales and 2.5% while the 1 Series is up 4% and one rank to #8 at 2,502 units and 2.4%. Below, the Seat Ibiza is back up 57% to #11, the Mercedes A-Class is up a huge 34 spots and 275% to #12 thanks to the new model, the Toyota Auris is up 87% to #17 and the Fiat 500 up 63% to #24 in spite of its old age.

There are a few newcomers in this year’s Top 100: leading them all is the Renault Captur which lands directly at #20 with 1,532 sales and 1.4% share but peaked at #6 in August and November, the Citroen C-Elysee arrives at #25 with 1,266 units and 1.2%, the Peugeot 2008 pops up at #34 and 937 sales, the Mercedes CLA at #58 and 486 units, Opel Adam at #70 with 347 sales, Mitsubishi Space Star at #81, Skoda Rapid at #89, Opel Mokka at #92 and the Chevrolet Trax at #100. Notice also the Volvo V40 up 235% to #31 for its first full year of sales and the Dacia Sandero up 251% to #35 thanks to the new generation.
