After after dropping by 17% in 2009, 36% in 2010, 31% in 2011 and 40% in 2012, the Greek new car market stabilised in 2013. And stabilised is the right word, given the market was in negative year-to-date during the entire year, edging back into positive in the last days of 2013 to finish at 58,694 registrations, up 218 units or 0.4% on 2012. Let’s not take out the champagne out the fridge yet: this is still the 2nd worst annual figure since 1988 and the 4th time in the last 30 years the market drops below 60,000 units… We’ll see if 2014 gets Greek new car sales back into a frank upwards trend. Lots of movement in the Greek brands ranking this year: replicating the models ranking where the Toyota Yaris reclaimed the lead over the Opel Corsa, Toyota replaces Opel as the most popular brand in the country thanks to sales up 14% to 6,529 and 11.1% share, ahead of Volkswagen (+5%), Opel (-21%), Hyundai up a splendid 51% and 5 spots to #4 and 6.8% share, Fiat (+9%) and Nissan (+9%).

For only the second time ever after 2010, the Toyota Yaris is the best-seller in Greece thanks to sales up 13% to 3,823 units and 6.5%, passing the Opel Corsa, leader in 2011 and 2012 but down 17% this year to just 3,271 sales and 5.6% share. The VW Polo is stable but gains one spot to #3, the Hyundai i20 improves by a huge 85% year-on-year to land in 4th place with 2,182 units and 3.7% while the VW Golf is up an even more impressive 115% to #5 and 2,166 sales. Other great performers this far in Greece include the Nissan Micra up 21% at #8, the Toyota Auris up 32% to #11, Hyundai i30 up 188% to #16, Renault Clio up 69% to #18, Audi A3 up 90% to #20, Mercedes A-Class up 102% to #22 (and up to #2 in December!) and the Volvo V40 up 277% to #23, one of its best rankings in the world.
