As the models and versions benefitting from preferential pricing evolved on a monthly basis this year, the Dutch new car market has become one of the most unpredictable from one year to another. It is down a harsh 17% on 2012 to 417,036 registrations, the slowest year since 2009. We welcome a brand new leader in the models sales charts in 2013: the VW Up is up 27% year-on-year to reach 16,187 sales for a solid 3.9% market share, meaning Volkswagen has placed one of its model in the Dutch pole position for 4 of the last 5 years: the Golf in 2009, Polo in 2010 and 2011 and Up in 2013, whereas it had managed that feat only once between 1982 and 2008 (the Golf was #1 in 2001).

This is the biggest market the Up has managed to top so far, with the second and only other one for now being Denmark. In fact, this year the long term shift away from Opel (leader in the Netherlands from 1969 to 2005) and Peugeot (placing a model in the top spot 6 times between 2002 and 2008) towards Volkswagen and Renault is more than ever obvious. Volkswagen evolves like the market (-17%) to remain at 12% share and Renault stays #2 at 8.9%, while Peugeot is down 25% to #4 and Opel down 33% to #7… 2013 even marks the first year in the history of automobile in the Netherlands that Volkswagen delivers a 1-2, with the Golf up a splendid 50% on 2012 to rank #2 with 14,521 sales and 3.5%. The Ford Focus rounds up the podium at 3.2% share, up 14%.

While last year’s winner the Renault Megane is down 41% to #4, the main benefiters from preferential pricing allocated to eco-friendly cars this year are the Volvo V40 up 314% to #5, the Renault Clio up 140% to #6 mainly thanks to the success of the station wagon variant, the Mitsubishi Outlander up 752% to #11 and peaking at 12.7% share in December, Volvo V60 up 230% to #14, Toyota Auris up 98% to #17 and the Audi A3 up 52% to #21. There are 3 all-new models inside the 2013 Top 50: the Renault Captur at #31, Peugeot 2008 at #47 and Mitsubishi Space Star at #48.
