After going through the August sales data, let’s try and extract some longer-term trends by looking into the year-to-date charts. The US market is up a shiny 10% so far in 2013 at 10.65 million registrations, or more in 8 months than during the entire year 2009! What we have observed during the previous months continues to be true: the pick-up trucks are pulling the market up big time this year in the US. Proof: 5 of the 7 biggest gainers in the year-to-date Top 40 belong to this category! The Ford F-Series is up 22% (#1), the Chevrolet Silverado up 25% (#2), Dodge Ram up 25% also (#5, biggest rank gainer in the Top 10 at +4), GMC Sierra up 24% (#19) and Toyota Tacoma up 22% (#26).

Hyundai Elantra USA August 2013. Picture courtesy of motortrend.comThe Hyundai Elantra is the biggest gainer in the Top 40 with sales up 30% on 2012.

The best performers in the Top 50 overall are passenger cars though: the Subaru Forester up 46% to #43 and the Hyundai Elantra up 30% to #13. Widen this to the Top 100 and we have the Nissan Pathfinder up 214% to #53, the Mazda CX-5 up 118% to #64 and the launch honeymoon is over so great word-of-mouth for Mazda’s SUV, Toyota Avalon up 145% to #69, VW Beetle up 66% to #90 and the Acura RDX up 81% to #93. Granted, the Dodge Dart is up 1341% but it was launched just over a year ago and is actually down to #58 vs. #56 after 7 months…

There is still one lonely all-new model inside the Top 100: the Subaru XV Crosstrek drops 2 ranks to #84 with 34,483. Not setting the world on fire, but playing its part in Subaru lodging record month after record month in the US. 3 additional newcomers inside the Top 200: the Ford C-Max at #107 (-1), Cadillac ATS at #111 (-3) and Buick Encore at #126 (+4). Hopefully one more will join these ranks next month: the Kia Cadenza is up 10 spots vs. last month to #201, as is the Fiat 500L up to #224 while the Infiniti Q50 lands directly at #2298, the Jaguar F-Type is up 7 to #239 and the Mini Paceman down one to #245.

Some vehicles display impressive growth disconnected with any major model change – let’s call this pure growth. For example the Audi Q5 is up 44% to #112, the GMC Yukon XL up 54% to #123, Mercedes GL Class up 27% to #125, Nissan Leaf up 234% to #143 (thanks to a reduced price), Porsche Cayenne up 40% to #156 and the Audi Q7 up 49% to #168. Finally notice the Tesla Model S inside the Top 150 with an estimated 13,150 sales.
